First DVC trip

My family is going on our first DVC trip to OKW on 1/19-1/23. I think the parks will be pretty slow then. My wife and 4 year old son are going. A few questions:

1. I am booked in a studio. I am contemplating changing to a 1BR. Could I still change at this late notice (w/in 30 days)? I think two queen beds at a OKW studio should suffice. What would you do?

2. What building would you recommend? We would like to be close to the main pool.

3. I rented a full size car for only $95 for four days. Now I am wondering if I even need the car or not. I hate to wait around a lot whether it is for ME or buses to the parks. I am thinking about cancelling the car and getting ME. What would you do? I know I can get some groceries delivered if I want, so why do I need the car? How has ME been lately?

Thanks for your input.

You lucky duck, you will be there to ride Expedition Everest!

I guess I wouldn't worry about requesting a specific building. We have stayed all over OKW, and there really aren't any awful areas. If you get placed a long way from the main pool, there is an internal bus that will be by about every 15 minutes and it stops at HH.

Changing to a 1 bedroom requires canceling one reservation and making a new one. The problem might be if there is availability at this late date. OKW seems to be at capacity right now (we have been here since 12/31 and will be leaving 1/10).

We don't find a car all that necesary once we get here.

As far as changing to a 1 bedroom, if there is availablility, you can just change the ressie. If you would like the convenience of a washer/drier, full kitchen etc. because of the low points in January, this would be an ideal time to try the 1 bedroom. We have never needed a 1 bedroom, with our groups, it's been studios or 2 bedrooms. Because your stay does include weekend nights, I suppose I would stay with the studio.

I can't help with room locations, we've only one OKW stay, it was in 64, a building with an elevator and it was perfect for we two adults. We did walk to the convenience store, the slide was being built when we were there, so didn't use that pool, we walked to the quiet pool on Miller's road, not a far walk either.

We like having a car, really because of church on Sunday, so I'm no help there either. Sometimes we use the car to go to eat breakfast at the Poly, we like Kona.

Have a great stay. We're staying at Pop and BWV this weekend coming up, again studio at BWV.

Yes it will be quiet. Do change if you can - one bed is well worth is - just call every day. No, a car is not necessary for four days. Have a great trip.

We love having our car @ OKW. We dine at a lot of different resorts though, and I'm really impatient waiting for buses :rotfl:

Do a 1 bedroom if it is available. OKW 1 bedrooms are to die for!
We love having a car to go when and where we please. $95 sounds like a small price to pay for vacation freedom. If you get an OKW building that is far from HH, you may really like having the car. And the parking right outside your room makes the car SO convenient!

If you and your wife want a bit of privacy and your son is OK sleeping in a room by himself (the sofa bed in the living room) by all means go for the one bedroom. Get some candles and some chanpagne for a nice bath.........
I would certainly suggest you get a car. At Boardwalk and Wilderness Lodge a car can be a liability; at Old Key West, it's so nice to pull right up to your room
