Our family just returned from an 8 day stay at OKW from 4/25 to 5/3. This was our first trip back to WDW in 8 years and our first trip as DVC members. Our overall experience was great and we are already planning a return trip next April (we got the AP’s this trip and will be back before they expire).

First the resort: we loved OKW. My only disappointment upon arriving was we did not get our room preference to be near the main pool area. It was explained to me that its first come first served on room assignments. We checked in about 4:30. Since check in is at 4, I thought that was early enough. But we did get our other preferences of top floor and non-smoking. We could have had a smoking room in 18, but we decided against that (are they really that bad smelling?)

We ended up in a beautiful 2 bedroom in blg 54. We were very impressed with the accommodations. Clean, spacious, quiet and great service. One morning the shower light went out and it was replaced before we retuned that afternoon. We took advantage of the kitchen for breakfasts and the washer/dryer to pack lighter and bring home clean clothes. Our family of 5 never felt cramped during our time in the room. Our balcony overlooked the golf course. We were right near one of the small pools. Since we had rented a car, it was no big deal to be far from the main pool, which the kids preferred due to the water slide and other recreation available there.

Now the rest: Our kids are 6, 9 and 14, so they can pull us in different directions. We waited a while for our youngest to be school age to return to WDW. But he ended up being afraid to try the rides and attractions, even the kiddie ones. That was a bummer. After dragging him on a few, crying and screaming, we gave up. Figured we will just share that with him on future visits. He was OK on the more open rides/attractions, like the AK Safari, the Jungle Cruise and the Living Seas..

Our days went like this: Eating breakfast in the room, getting to the parks around 9am and lasting till about 1pm, eating lunch at the parks. A little pricy, but the food was pretty good. By afternoon it was getting hot and crowded and we were tired so we’d head back to OKW to enjoy the pool. A couple of days my older son and I would stay longer at the parks and my wife would take the two little ones back. We ate all our dinners out and spent some evening time at the parks. We took the bus to MK, but mostly drove to the other parks. We found it can be a 20-30 minute for a bus if you leave the parks midday like we were.

Since I hadn’t been to WDW in some time, there was so much new to see as well as familiar favorites. I got to go on just about all of the new (to me) rides. I didn’t mind missing some, because we are going back soon! Soaring just opened and it is a great ride. I didn’t like the “new” Tiki Room show. Fantasmic was great. I remembered more lasers in Illuminations and missed those. Didn’t get to see Wishes. My only WDW criticism is too many gift shops. Its especially frustrating since we have 2 spoiled kids who want a gift from every one.

We ate dinner mostly at WDW (I picked up a DDE card for the trip which helped). Two nights we went off site to restaurants recommended on the disboards, Giordano’s and Sweet Tomatoes – thanks disboards! I planned a some of our dinners at the other DVC resorts so we could check them out. We went to Whispering Canyon Café which everyone thought was too loud, except my 9 year old who enjoyed screaming back at the waitress. Another night we tried the Cape May Café at the Beach Club. The kids enjoyed playing on the beach afterwards. We also visited the Boardwalk and Saratoga Springs. Other than OKW, our next favorite was Boardwalk and we are going to try and stay there next time if we can get in. We plan on arriving Thurs or Fri and staying in a Wilderness Cabin first to save weekend points (its already booked!)

Our last morning we ate breakfast at the Kona Café to try Tonga Toast for the first time. It is good, but heavy. Next time I would share an order. We took the monorail loop for a final look around before checking out and heading to the airport.

Enjoyed reading your report - thanks for posting it. Glad you had a good time. Isn't it amazing how your attitude about going to the parks changes when you know you'll be back soon? :)

Best wishes-

Glad your first trip as a DVCer went so well! Funny how owning can make such a difference in all your plans. :flower:

Is building #18 smoking optional now? I thought I read a post recently of the smoking optional buildings and #18 wasn't listed. Anyone else been there recently and gotten a nonsmoking villa in building #18?

Great report! Thanks for posting and I'm happy you enjoyed your 1st DVC stay! :sunny:

Thanks for the trip report. You were my ROFR buddy. DH & I are taking our first trip this weekend without the kids!

Actually, DVC rooms are pretty much said to be ready for occupancy by 4:00 p.m., but you can check in any time of the day you like. So you could check in, say, at 10:00 in the morning and lock up your room, but maybe it wouldn't be ready until 4:00. So my guess is that there were many check ins that preceeded yours that day.

Thanks for sharing your impressions and comments about OKW. I'm glad you had a great trip. :)

We just returned from a week in a studion in Bldg. 18, rm. 1831 to be exact. Our room had no indication of being smoked in, and I did not detect any indication of smoking from the other rooms while on the balcony or going to and from the room.

The room was super quiet, and we had a great time!

Yeah... check in is at 4, only 4 allowed in a studio, no smoking allowed in an NS room, pool towels must remain in the pool areas that close at 10 pm, and only authorized people get past the security entrance gate. In WDW the rules are cast in Disney concrete...it never sets.

The good news is that you got the rest of your requests. Bldg. 54 is one of my favorite areas. Glad to hear that you had a great time.

We are not smokers but I never even include a smoking request anymore on my reservations...we have wound up in smoking buildings at OKW at least 3 or 4 times and have never yet had one that smelled smoky (now we don't have anyone with allergies or anything either...just don't like smoke and my DD has a nose like a blood hound...she can't stand any hint of smoke and she has never complained)...In fact the only time we ever smelled smoke was in a non-smoking unit where the lady next door spent 20 hours a day smoking on her balcony and it reeked whenever you went outside...

Don't be too disapointed about not getting your request near the main building....I think something like 60% of requests are for those buildings....we never got one, but over the years have found other areas we like and we always get those requests.

And not that you asked, but here is my 2 cents on kids and gift shops....before you leave home give each kid X dollars (Disney dollars work great)...and make sure they understand that those are for anything they want....they can pick out any toy etc with that $$, you do not have to approve, it is totally their decision, but when it is gone that is it for the trip and they may not ask for anything else...they can choose 1 big thing or a bunch of little things, whatever....this worked wonders for us I suggested that they just "shop" the first few days of the trip and decide what they wanted most and then towards the end of the stay (usually the last day) we would make a shopping trip go back to get whatever they had decided on and they could make their purchases...this was great because the stuff always kept them occupied on the trip home!! I think they had almost as much fun changing their minds about what they wanted most over the week than they did spending their $$ in the end. Our last day shopping trip is a tradition they still look forward to (and they are 15 and 17 now!! Fortunately now they use their own $$)

My friend always had hers look all week and then on the last day they could pick out any 1 item they wanted (I was always afraid to try that because with my luck one of mine would choose the $400 life sized Winnie the Pooh or something and it would have to sit in my lap on the plane home!!)

I think the key is having a plan that they understand BEFORE you leave home....it will really help.

Thanks for a great report. I will make my first trip home oct 9 OKW and hope i enjoy it as much as you did
