We have been to Walt Disney World many many times. This August we will traveling to California and want to spend one day at the Disneyland Park.

Would love to know any tips or must dos that would be different than our Florida trips.

TIA

Stacie

We have a pretty full agenda, but are fitting in a day for Disney. Would love longer, but one day is better than none.

Following, we are in the same boat. We’ve been to WDW many times. I went to DL once as a kid back in 1981. It’s been awhile. Our family is going in July. Can’t wait!

..well someone will post a thread for WDW folks visiting Disneyland...as for a one day visit try to focus how much culture you want to asorb as opposed to the thrill of the attractions. The problem you have is that you will have to invest some time and extra cost to see Raditor Springs, which is the best Disney product created so far, very theme immersive!!!!

....as for the folks visiting in july. knowing the dates will help folks here help you for a summer time visit that is more than a day long....i.e. heat, summer crowds, lodging, spreading out the pageant activities, closures . ...etc

You will need to prioritize LOL!

This link is the default starting point for folks like you but is geared towards multi-day visits. Nevertheless I think it will get you asking the right questions!

Get MaxPass. I have not used it but everyone that has raves about it. If you can get hoppers do it - I never hop at WDW but at DLR it is so easy! No bus, monorail, boat - just your feet ;)

I would focus on the things DLR has that WDW does not - Mr Toad, Alice, Snow White, Pinocchio, Storybook Canal, Casey Jr, castle walkthough, Nemo subs, Roger Rabbit, Indy, Matterhorn. Sometimes the canoes are open. POTC is very different and worth the wait.

DCA is a beautiful park, really like nothing at WDW. Carsland is the best themed land Disney has (so far). WoC is our must do show, we splurge on the dessert party - no wait, you have seats, and sweet stuff to eat and drink. Paint the Night is coming back, this time to DCA. It starts in the Spring and I doubt it will go away before your trip. This is a must see, especially if you like MSEP.

I would skip TS just because that would just take time from your park day - but if you are planning on a TS I would do Blue Bayou. Again, something that WDW does not have. For CS I would do the Plaza Inn for their fried chicken (pretty famous around here). Beignets at Mint Julep Bar for a snack (I like the ones at Ralph Brennan's better but they are not Mickey shaped ;)).
Pacific Wharf at DCA has several different choices in the same area (like a food court) so you can all get something different. I love the Cozy Cones in Carsland. I get the Mac n' Cheese or the chili cone - fast, easy, eat on the go!

Other good places for food - Rancho Del Zocalo (cs), Cafe Orleans (ts but you can share a Monte Cristo!), Bengal BBQ (cs), Carthay Circle (ts), Flo's V8 (cs).
I would skip DtD, nothing super different than what you find at WDW...except the beignets at Ralph Brennan's.

Spring for the park hoppers. Only DCA has Carsland and only DL has Indy. Neither are to be missed! MP will be a necessity for hitting all the top rides, and if you get there before the park opens you should be able to hit all the top liners!

Don't get a park hopper ticket. Just stick to Disneyland if you're only going to be there for one day.
One day....
Don't bother with a hopper, unless you have a 7am DL opening and Midnight closing. Then you might consider it, to have a view of DCA.

The park hopper is most important if you have only one day. Park hopping DL is simple as the 2 parks are a short court yard away with no security checks (that is done before you enter the park court yard). Park hoppers will allow you to treat the 2 parks as one. Then, I 100% agree with other posters, MaxPass is well worth the $10 per person, even if it's just for the PhotoPass.

Have a magical time!

Are you planning on doing a park hopper to see California Adventure? If not I suggest waking up very early and plan to stay very very late. It's going to be a lot of walking and you're going to be super exhausted with hurt feet by the end of it but it will be so worth it. You only have a day so you will have to try to do as much as you can.

One warning I give to all WDW vets going to DL for the first time is be aware that a lot of the queues are outdoors. I know people love California weather but it's California and it gets really hot so make sure you are hydrated with lots of sunblock!

As someone mentioned earlier definitely do the rides WDW doesn't have. Pinocchio, Mr. Toad, Snow White, Matterhorn, Story Book Canals, Indiana Jones, even the Sleeping Beauty Walk Through in the castle (wait til the evening to do this so it gets less crowded).

Invest in Max Pass (someone can give you better info on this cuz I haven't used it before) but its essentially a paid service to reserve fast passes.

Do the rides that WDW has but are different enough to make them unique. Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, even the monorail.

A tip about fastpasses is (with the exception of max pass) you will have to physically go to the machine to get a fast pass like the old system at WDW. This can add even more walking so be aware.

Look for little bits of magic as you go. The characters will be out of the streets without necessarily having a dedicated building venue for them like at WDW. You can see Walt's Apartment above the fire house. You can see the suite above Pirates.

GET THE CHURROS. Super important. So much better than the ones at Disney World.

Though you may be walking a lot from trying to cram everything in try to take a break. The last thing you want is to be exhausted with your trip and feel obligated to finish the day. This happened to me once. I was so focused on trying to fit everything in that I forgot how to relax and ended up in so much pain from walking so much that I was so ready for the day to be done that we left early. Wake up early, but in the afternoon take a break at your hotel or stop by downtown disney and get a drink or two. Try to pack everything in, but also be realistic about your limits. Push yourself but not too far (do I sound like a contradiction yet? :P)

Enjoy! You may not get to see everything but I'm sure you'll have such a good time that you'll be planning your next trip on your way back home! What you cant see this trip you can always see next time :)

Many strategies you would use at Disney World are the same (arrive early, stay late, take full advantage of Fastpass, etc). Just make sure you understand Fastpass/Maxpass (much different from Disney World. You can’t reserve FP earlier than the day of.). Go to the park plenty before the park opens and do the park first that does not have EMH (That most likely means doing California Adventure first if it’s Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, and Disneyland first if it’s Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, or Friday.)

If you only have one day, I'd forget the hopper and just see Disneyland. It will have more than enough to keep you occupied and it's the more important park to see. The only thing you'd really miss is RSR which, while great, is not $50 great. Stick to DL.

Personally, if I only had one day, I would go to California Adventure (unless you don’t like thrills). By August, Pixar Pier will be open with Incredicoaster and in addition to RSR, Soarin’ and GOTG are really amazing.
