Going to our Nephews 1st Communion and my Husband is the Godfather. They are Catholic and I am sure have allllll the Gold Crosses etc etc that he will need! What else is appropriate?

Thanks!:thumbsup2

For a 1st Communion gift, I usually go to Hallmark & get a nice picture frame.
They've had some really nice ones in the past that are inscribed with "First Communion".

As a a Godparent you will want to get a 'meaningful gift" as this is an important religious milestone.

an inscribed childrens bible....or

For a boy if he does not already have one-a "grown up" watch.....or

what I have done for all my godchildren.... A savings bond.....

If you aren't giving a cross then I would suggest getting a gold medal for the child to wear with the cross such as a Saint that is either the same name as the child or something close or perhaps St. Anthony if you can't find a saint's name that is the same as the child's. Talk to the parents. Most people don't give a gold cross unless they are the Godparents. In our family my parents and sister (the Godmother) always gives the medals and crosses as well as the Italian horn and/or fingers.

I did a saint medal of the child's name (if it is a saint's name), a book about the saint, and a prayer card with the saint's prayer on it and a statue...but mine was easy...my godchild's name is Mary. For our nephew whose name is Robert...believe it or not there is a Saint Robert and I was able to find everything except a statue. I think we also gave him a $25 bond, in addtion ot the medal, book & prayer card.

Unless they are a very devout Catholic family, he may not have a cross necklace. We Catholics don't run out and buy every cross ever made on a daily basis!;) Truthfully, I am 45 years old and don't own a cross necklace!

I have also bought a really good crucifix...one that the child could carry into adulthood. Friends of ours are Irish, so we wnt to the religious store and bought their child a really nice pewter Celtic cross to hang on his bedroom wall. It is not a babyish one though...it's a very classic Celtic cross, which he can have forever and hang in his home as an adult (if he chooses to) and it won't look silly or out of place.

You might also consider a "nice" Rosary...again, I prefer one that will last for the ages, and not the babyish ones they sometimes have for 1st Communion.

..to everyone.
Some great ideas here. His name is 'Liam' so I am doubting there is a Saint by that name!;)

My vote would be for a nice set of Rosary beads. My entire family is Catholic and that is when we received our first set. My Godfather gave me mine. My DS is having his First Communion this Saturday and I have completely forgotten to get him a set. Thanks for the reminder!!! :flower3:

BTW - I don't believe anyone in my family (with the exception of my grandmother) has a gold cross. ;)

What about Disney stock? Both my DD's got disney stock when they were baptised.

That would be Saint William - since Liam is Irish for William.

YES! Liam is the gaelic version of William.

I would check with the parents, but maybe a nice Celtic cross on a chain. DS is Ian, and my brother and his wife gave him a Celtic cross for his 1st Communion. He wears it every day, and our Parish priest even blessed it for him a couple of weeks after the 1st Communion mass.

In my Catholic family, the godparents are the ones who get the godchild their first (and in most cases, their only) cross.

Trying to figure out if that was a "dig" on Catholic and having all those crosses:confused3. Don't know what that was all about.
