Our niece has her first communion. Is it appropriate to give a gift? What kind? Money in a card?

A simple silver charm bracelet with a cross would be nice. Hint that the Disney resorts have wonderful charms to add to it & the goal is to make it so laden with charms that it jingles like a gypsy dancing into the room. :goodvibes If you do this, buy an adult sized bracelet and have an inch or two removed by the jeweler that she can add back on as she grows older.

Of all the gifts I got for my first communion, it was the bracelets I love the most.

I think these posts are great. My son made his last year and in all honesty, he REALLY enjoyed the money. I was glad that he did get a cross, personalized bible and a few other religious keepsakes. I know when my nephew makes his-it'll be $$ for him.

I usually give a nice cross for religious occasions...not a baby-ish "it's my first Communion" thing, but a nice cross that the child would still be able to hang in his/her home when they were older, if they so chose.

If they are Irish, a Celtic cross is great. My gift of choice for all religious events involving Irish children is a nice pewter Celtic cross. Works for them as a child, and continues to work for them as an adult.

We are invited to three First Communion parties in the next two weekends. How much cas do you give? I know the answer to this question will vary with different regions, but I'd love a ball-park number if people don't mind (and if the OP doesn't mind me hijacking this post a bit). All 3 children are friends of my daughter, and we are casually friendly with the parents. We're not Catholic so we don't have any experience with this.
Thank you!

Casual friends? I'd go with $15 - $20 cash, card and a token toy your daughter will feel good about giving her friends. (a Lamb beanie baby comes to mind & is symbolic)

God parents & grandparents have the bulk of the burden for gifts. I recall getting $100 back in the 70s. I can only imagine what it is now.

$20 is fine.

I would suggest a nice beanie bear. The first communion one from a religious store, was a big hit with my aunts daughters last weekend

two of my own kids are having thier first communion this weekend- I plan on getting them a medal. Then our oldest DD14 has her conformation next weekend she is wanting St. Christopher medal.

Around here, only close family members give gifts instead of chash or savings bonds (or else you could end up with a bunch of necklaces or bracelets, bibles and rosaries). Most give between $25 - $100, depending upon the relationship.

We usually give a token gift along with a cash in a card. Things my DDs have received: white stuffed animal, necklace with a cross or heart, stained glass window ornament (angel), blank journal and pretty pen, willow tree angel, charm bracelet, wind chimes (my dd really liked this), poetry book, small jewelry box, mini american girl doll, Chicken Soup for the Child's Soul book, .......

My kids had nice crosses by the time they made their first comm. so I'd maybe check with the parents first. Usually cash or a savings bond works best.

My DS is making his Communion this week, pretty much everyone is giving him cash. He does have a nice gold cross that he got when he had his Baptism.
