My son turns 1 this October and we’ve decided to have two parties during his birthday weekend. Is it a strange thing to have?

I would host the party with our friends and my sisters are hosting the family party. The parties will be on two separate days.

Is it a strange concept? We have a large family and have a lot of close friends with kids and it would be 60+ people if we had one party.

This is NOT a strange concept! A lot of families (including mine) do the same thing!

Not strange in concept all depends on the make up of the friends and make up of the families.

Big families may want their own party, lots of friends then you may want a separate party for that.

Then there's feeling like a more intimate family celebration is called for (irrespective of how many people are in the family).

Lots of different ways.

Only thing I would honestly be thinking about is the temperament of the 1 year old for having two celebrations with the stimuli of both.

My sister has twins that turned 1 in June and there were 2 parties. There was a bigger party at a venue with friends and some family and then a smaller party at home with just the immediate family.

I think it’s fine to have two parties, but I wouldn’t do both the same weekend. It could be overwhelming for the baby, especially if it interferes with his regular sleep routine.

Let’s face it, a first birthday party is not really for the baby, it’s for the parents. We did the first few birthdays for immediate family and very close friends only, keeping the guest list to a minimum. When he got to school age, we always had a kid’s party (for HIS friends), and a separate family party, that sometimes also included a few of our close friends (with their children ). YMMV

Yeah I think he will be okay with both. He’s a pretty chill guy and loves to just soak in his surroundings.

I had two baby showers for this reason. It definitely wasn’t as overwhelming and I was able to spend time with my guests instead of feeling rush.

Thank you everyone!

Next question.. should I do a smash cake at both? I know my sister is making the smash cake for the family party which will actually be his birthday.

I thought a fun idea for the friend party would be a yogurt smash or something. He could go crazy with yogurt.

I would have cake at both. He can have a smash cake at the one, and a slice of cake at the other. Everyone will enjoy the adorable photo-op of him wearing the cake at both. You could always put some yogurt next to the cake, instead of ice cream. That makes it a healthy dessert, right? No matter how you do it, he'll end up wearing more than he eats. And it will be glorious!

Go for it! We do 3 celebrations for birthdays.
1. Day trip on their actual birthday with just the 4 of us
2. Party with their friends
3. Party with the family

It works for us and makes the kids feel special.
Do 2 cakes, they only turn 1 once.

Happy birthday to your little one.

When our kids were little we would have a party day that started with their friends (house full of kids and kid games) and ended with dinner with older family members. The cake was the crossover in the middle. We did that for about six or seven years. And then it was two separate parties. You gotta go with what works.
