Firm beds at the hotels

I have heard a number of times that the beds in Japan are pretty firm. That worries me because I have lower back problems and I need a softer mattress. Has anyone else run into this and if so was there anything you were able to do to make the bed more comfortable? I saw someone say they bought a blanket to put on top of the mattress.

Our experience was that American chains with new rooms (one a new hotel, the other recently remodeled) had softer beds than older hotels and more Japanese hotels. At TDR we stayed at the Hilton in a club level room. Beds were very close to American beds in level of firmness.

Every room I've stayed at in the Hilton had beds that are slightly firmer than Hiltons in the US. They're not as firm as beds at the Disney hotels but I know quite a few people who still find them too firm. The Sheraton's beds are more comparable to American Sheratons.

Bring a sheet from home to use as a cover and sleep on top of the duvet to use it as padding. This ended up helping me (although it took me a few days to figure it out. Lol)

Can confirm that the beds are firm in Japanese hotels, including Disney. Maybe this is just me but I was SO dead tired after each day that it didn't even bother me. Also I found Disney hotels to be less firm than other hotels I stayed at in Japan (I stayed at Sotetsu and Dormy Inn brand hotels).

I second the suggestion of sleeping on the duvet. One the the hotels we stayed in while in Japan stocked extra duvets in the rooms where they knew Americans would be staying, because apparently it was a common issue.

Alternatively, you could bring a spare duvet from home or even a foam mattress topper and use a vacuum sealer bag to flatten it and pack in your luggage. We got one with a hand pump a few years back for travel and it's super helpful.

I have a bad back (scoliosis+ hypermobility) and even though I didn't feel the mattresses were very comfortable, it was pretty good for back pain overall. I used a heating pad, and Natrol Sleep n Restore (melatonin+valerian) on nights I was really struggling to fall asleep.
