Guy Fawkes tried (but failed) to blow up parliament (the UK government buildings). In memory of this we have fireworks parties (either at home or in parks etc).
BF thinks it promotes terrorism and is tantamount to having parties to comemorate the London bombings. But its a time honoured tradition and I'll still be trying to persuade BF to come to a fireworks party with me tomorrow!
The link above gives more info than I can I'm afraid.
That's also true actually. And children make a model of Guy Fawkes (like a scarecrow type of thing) and stand outside collecting money 'pennies for the guy'.
But I think those traditions are rarely still practiced, now it's mainly just fireworks (and alcohol!)
This year is the 400th anniversary of an attempt by religious fundamentalists, Catholics, to blow up the then Houses of Parliament and assassinate King James l.
These terrorists were Roman Catholics whose religion was proscribed at that time. They were informed on, captured and executed.
We celebrate their failure by having huge bonfires upon which are placed either an effigy of Guy Fawkes or the Pope. Firework displays accompany this ritual burning.
Most towns and villages have one or more events on and around the 5th of November. It is much more important than Halloween which is a recent US import.
Remember, remember the fifth of November.
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.
I see no reason why Gunpowder, Treason
Should ever be forgot.
We have laws, here, in our county, that people can only shoot off fireworks on certain days of the year. (I think we are limited to July 4th and New Years') Do you have such laws where you live?
I don't think those laws are valid for the whole country, I'm pretty sure fireworks are regulated by each state. We spend a lot of time in Myrtle Beach and people shoot fireworks on the beach literally every night in the summer.

I don't believe we have that law in the UK. We do have laws as to how old you have to be to buy and possess fireworks. I live near a castle where there are weddings nearly every weekend so we see fireworks from there nearly every Saturday.
