Fireplaces

I am thinking about getting a fireplace. Not a real one, but one of those ventless ones, or one that burns the gel under the concrete firelogs. Anyone have one of these? Right now I'm more interested in the ones that burn the gel. Thanks

We have a ventless gas fireplace. It is fine and does produce heat. I wish the flames were larger, it is already at it's max. We had a wood burning fireplace at our last house which I really loved.
I don't know anything about the gel kind.

The ventless work pretty good if you have the gas in teh house otherwise propane can get expensive

Good question. Sorry I can't help, but I am interested in the responses.

We are building a house and decided not to get a gas fireplace put in right now (too expensive). We do want to get a gas fireplace put in eventually that looks like a real fireplace (stone fireplace with mantle) not one of those cheap-o things that they sell at Home Depot/Lowes but had no idea if they were good. We do have gas heat, would just need to run a gas line over to the fireplace. Looking forward to more responses.

I bought a beautiful fireplace a few years ago that uses the gel cans. The quality of it is great and I love the fact that it's so portable. I've moved it around to almost every room in my house. The gel flame lasts about 4 hours and it's fine right up until that last 30 minutes. At that time, it does start giving off a bit of an odor. Not too bad, just sort of a tangy smell to it. As for using it as a heating source, you really need to be sitting right in front of it to feel any effects. I don't think it ever warmed up the room that we had it in.

I recently purchased one of the newer electric heat fireplaces and I love it. Again, it's portable and there's no smell. You can even have just the "flame" on without the heat.
