We will be at WDW in July of this year for our first trip. I was wondering if we may encounter fireflies/lightning bugs there? We will be at POFQ. I've had the unique experience of seeing them in person in Atlanta, but the kids have only seen them in the POC at DL. I appreciate and information.

I honestly don't think we have them in Florida. If we do have them I surely can't recall the last time I ever saw any other than when I was up north. We have lovebugs but they aren't nearly as cool as lightning bugs.

LilGMom,
Thanks for the info. I've tried searching the boards, but nothing ever came up regarding these creatures. Someone once told me that it had to do with being too close to the ocean. Hopefully, they will make an appearance while we are there. If not I know where to find them, POC.

I am actually pretty sure we saw them at POR last July. I could be mistaken, since we have definitely seen them here in Atlanta, but I have this memory of seeing them as we walked back from the pool one night.

Thanks Princess Roo,

I know that it's a small thing, but my kids would flip if they saw fireflies. We'll cross our fingers.

I remember as a kid staying out late and catching them all over our yard. Sometimes we would keep them for a day and then let them go. Now that my son is 2 and into bugs I'm sure he'll get a kick out of them too. We just moved to NC though so I hope they have them here too.

nope, no lightning bugs here. We have love bugs that look like lightning bugs but they don't blink, they hover around you and are attached to one another.

I thought it was odd too when we first moved here but we don't have them.

Sorry

mom2of2,

It looks like we'll have to setlle for POC fireflies.
Thanks!

I concur - no fireflies in FL. That was one thing that DD (6 at the time) was really disappointed in when we moved from PA to Florida. She LOVED to go out and catch lightening bugs, or just watch them for that matter.

There are plenty of them in NC!!!! I looooooove to put them in jars with holes poked on top...ok, I have stopped doing that now that I'm in college, but I did that all the time in the summer when I was littleprincess:

And from my favorite Faith Hill Song....
"I found mayonnaise bottles and poked holes on top
To capture Tinker Bell
And they were just fireflies to the untrained eye
But I could always tell"

Looks like I'll have to take the girls up to N.C. so they can have some of those fond memories.

Thanks CarolinaGirl86
