Ok, I think fires aren't allowed at the Fort (?) but I'm not camping there;) and wondered if some experienced campers could help...... I just bought some cool pie irons, and can't wait to try them out! Do they work best in a fire? or a Coleman stove? and if a fire is used for cooking, which is easier/better,wood or a bag of charcoal? I've camped in the past, but not often, and gearing up for the new season (tenters, woohoo)
DH also wants to try ducth oven cookig in the fire......
prior to this,we used a wood fire for marshmallows,etc- and the stove to cook.
TIA!:cool1:

We use ours a lot, always over a wood fire. they do take some practice to get used to, cooking times and intensity of the fire are tough to guage sometimes. We will make entire meals over the campfire sometimes. My oldest son is the master of the pie makers, he has an egg/ham/cheese one that is great for breakfast or as a late meal. You are only limited by your imagination.
we make:
fruit pies
ham/cheese
grilled cheese
breakfast with egg and bacon or ham
pizza
peanut butter and jelly...... :thumbsup2
beef stew

They do have grills at the Fort and you can use your pie irons on charcoal in the grills.

I haven't tried pie irons yet but, i did get to use my dutch oven for the first time camping this weekend. I'm hooked. It was so nice having fresh hot breads. Yummy!! Maybe it was just me but i think it had a better taste. Something about cooking it over a campfire. mydutchoven.com had some great recipes. Happy cooking!!

ok...beef stew in a pie iron? how do you do that? I'm heading to dutchoven.com for the bread idea......mmmmmmmm

I agree that pie irons work best in wood fires --preferably in hot coals. I love apple fruit pies and any berry fruit pie. I alsolike to cook fire meals in foil. It just tastes better that way!

Another fan of the Pie Iron/ Firewood Combo...

Although for breakfast we loved using coals on our mini smokey joe

Just put your slices of bread in the pie iron (we call them "pudgy" pies)
and load it up with stew, a slice of cheese is optional. A couple of big spoonfuls is all you need of the stew. It tastes just like sunshine :goodvibes
