My 14yo son's skin is peeling on his fingers. It kind of looks like athlete's feet except he says it doesn't itch or burn. I told him to keep his hands clean and dry. DH is calling to schedule a doc apt fot him. He's a soccer goalie and is using last year's gloves- just started using them two weeks ago. The gloves are the only thing we can pinpoint. No burns, no recent calluses or blisters, there is no discoloration. He'll likely need to tell the back up goalie to get his own gloves. Any other ideas?

Excema probably. Keep the are clean and moisturized. 'Tis the season.

Has he been washing his hands like mad. My kids are so freaked out from all the swine flu information that they have been saniizing, washing maniacs. Maybe his hands are just getting dry.

Peeling fingers is also a symptom of strep........

I think it's the gloves. make sure they are drying between uses.

I agree with amid chaos, if they're last year's gloves, and have been sitting since last season, they could be the suspects.

We stuff DS's keeper gloves with newspaper after training and games to help them dry out.

I had that happen to some of my fingers when I was working as a waitress. I attributed it to having my hands in the soapy dishwater so often, rinsing and wringing out the cloths we used to wipe down the tables.

They would be fine on my days off, but when I worked (especially several days in a row) the skin would peel off.

Since I am no longer working there, haven't had the problem in almost a year.

Could be callouses? I have some that have peeled on my thumb and the palm of my hand (from using a pitchfork in my barn all day everyday).

I've also heard that it could be from strep.

And I absolutely wouldn't let him share his goalie gloves...the bacteria that must be harbored in those things. And the stink! :scared1:

I second stuffing the gloves with newspaper after using them, and making sure they're dried out. Maybe use powder in them too? And have two sets of gloves (I know they can be really expensive.) My son plays defense, so our only experience is with wet smelly cleats. Soccer is a smelly sport. We take newspapers with us to tournaments ever since one rainy weekend when the hotel sold out the daily newspaper early.

It's fungus. The doc checked his throat too. Old gloves are gone and new gloves will not be shared. We'll take your advice and stuff with paper between uses-daily. I've asked him to skip using gloves for practice this week. yep, they're expensive - $65 a pair for mid priced, good leather. I let him try on the $130 pair and he like the $65 pair better-tg! We have script anti-fungal and something else. I called the mom of the other boy and told her he'd need his own gloves. Sad thing is DS says they probably can not afford them. sigh
We need to start taking our equipment more seriously. Ds is a 3 sport kid and we need a room JUST for all the equipment!!!

You can use small fans to dry gloves; a lot of the hockey players we know use them. You want room-temp gently circulating air, not heat, but it can help make sure that the gear fully dries.

(Hockey families are famous for building anti-stink perforated PVC gear-drying racks to air out gear with a fan aimed into the pipes. DD's bf is one of 3 players in his family; the powered drying rack in their garage is enormous. Youtube is full of videos that show how to build them.)

ARRGH -- I was bitten by a zombie thread!! Sorry.

My husband had this problem. He was using eyeglass cleaning wipes. When he stopped it went away. Is your son using something with alcohol. Like cleaning fluids.

At this point, the kid in question probably has kids of his own...
In that case He is probably more familiar now with what I thought it was - Hand, foot and mouth disease. Kids in preschool get it. Older kids and adults are not supposed to get it, but I got it twice while my kids were in preschool. No biggie - the skin on your fingers peels and your taste buds tingle, but it goes away just like anything else.
