I realize that this is an YMMV kind of topic but I was interested in hearing what others total number of points they have and what they think that their ideal number of points would be. I would love to hear from members that their vacation needs have changed as well. Did you start out needing a larger unit and now find you like a smaller one? Vice versa?? Trying to find our sweet spot points wise for now and for the future and my DH and I have different train of thoughts. Neither better or worse but different. Thanks for your input in advance!

Just bought in at Copper Creek with 100 points. A studio will suit my family of 4 just fine for now. I expect to add on in future years but it will likely be done in the resale market. I expect the biggest driver will be the arrival of grandchildren which better not happen any time soon.

We have 185 points at BLT, which we wanted to easily be able to get a studio for a week in any season if need be, and that would enable us to bank/borrow to occasionally have a 1BR for our family of 4 (2 young girls). Now what I think will ACTUALLY happen is that we will decide that we really like being in at least a 1BR, and end up buying more points.

One problem with our plan is that we were planning to buy after our upcoming studio stays at VGF and BCV this August, to decide on resort and whether we would actually be ok staying in a studio. But we sort of jumped the gun on buying the contract, so we haven't actually stayed in a studio yet... our DVC stays have been in a 1BR (we were pixie dusted from a studio, so we were actually trying to try it) and 2BR.

Edited: I read your post more closely - what is your and DH's different trains of thought? My DH says he will be fine in a studio, but he's the one who's a little more particular about things like that, and I have a feeling he is going to think that a studio is too small, LOL. I didn't want to overbuy because he did say "we should just stay in a studio," but I also know that he changes his mind about such things.

I have 125 points, enough for a week in a studio at most times of the year. It's just me, technically, but I know my parents want to tag along, and my brothers will be begging once Star Wars Land is up and running. Long term I intend to wind up with about 250, enough for a 1-bedroom most of the time, with occasional 2-bedroom stays when banking/borrowing. I intend to be the favorite Auntie once my brothers have kids. :thumbsup2

I am fine with studios for our two week long vacations per year. He would like a more spacious abode...lol.We own 150 at Poly now which is a little small to be able to have a studio any time of year so I thought we may add a bit to this one to get an even 200. Then get another contract elsewhere.
I don't want too many points but I also don't want to be stuck buying OTP all of the time. I know how we travel NOW but am not sure about the later part. Trying to see how people generally thought about traveling once the shine of DVC gets a little more dull.

There are so many variables that it's hard to say. Here are a few thoughts. First educate oneself and get enough direct experience to make an informed decision up front. Once one has that info, the best home resort, UY and number of points should be fairly obvious within reason. For most situations I wouldn't go below 150 resale (? plus a 25 pt add on) and would try to limit contract sizes to no more than 250 if possible for most situations. Often one needs a cushion of 10-20% but more for studios and lower seasons and less for higher seasons with larger villas. Once one gets to a certain volume it's actually best to under buy at times, maybe buy 220 when 250 seems best. For those looking at larger points needs, esp where more than 1 contract may be best anyway, buying one and seeing how it goes is often the best choice.

We bought DVC when our daughter was a toddler (7 years ago now) and our vacation style hasn't changed. Lots of park time, a little exploring the resort, always in a studio. What has changed is when we travel. Not drastically, but enough that 2 UY now makes sense for us. We have purchased multiple small resale contracts to keep up with our vacations. We also will stay at a value or mod if we plan an extra trip. We are quite comfortable in a studio with the 3 of us, but we're eyeing the 1BR as an occasional treat.

I think @Dean nailed it. Focus on the resort that you want . Do some research on availability (such as your likelihood of snagging a value studio at AKL or a standard view studio at BWV during F&W). Look at the points charts for it but take other resorts that you may want to stay at into consideration. There is no "ideal" number of points, only what works for you. Some members have a 50-point contract and make that work for themselves by using their points during the lowest point seasons for shorter stays every couple of years. Others have hundreds of points across multiple resorts and they routinely stay in larger villas, for longer visits and more than once a year.

I see from your signature that you have 3 children, one of which is an 18-year-old boy. Will he be traveling with you on trips? A studio is very cramped for a family of 5 but can be especially tight when those people are adults and teens. Before you commit to buying DVC, try staying in a studio by renting a reservation to see if you will find the accommodations to be tolerable. I find that I'm not very happy if there's more than 1 other adult in the room but if you have stayed at hotels for a week with everyone in the same room and still like each other at the end, then a studio might work.

Started with 200 points and studios, one stay each year and grew from there. One bedroom minimum now, went to three stays per year, now still one bedroom but one or two stays per year except when we skip for a mega non-Disney cruise.

My 18 yo is off to college and for awhile won't travel with us. We do already own Poly and don't mind studios. However, we travel often for our childrens' competitive sports and I am not sure whether in the future we aren't going to change our minds about our needs. I am just trying to see how vacationing has changed for those that have had their DVC for awhile. I know the resorts, point amounts needed and UY that would best suit our needs now. Just trying to get a gage on how others vacationing needs have evolved. Thank you for your reply :)

This is what I was asking. Thank you! I have all of the details worked out just not sure what our long term plan is and I like to plan! Our next step is resale but I really want to know that what we purchase will work for us. Our planning wasn't so stellar on the first one ( direct) and I would like this next one to better thought out. Thanks again for your reply!

Alright. Here's out tale.

We made our first purchase (very small contract at AKV) with the anticipation of using it every 2-3 years for a "couples" vacation in a studio for 5 nights (our average length of stay). The kids were in middle and high school (ages 16, 14 & 13) and we were already taking long weekends away without them, so we started out as DVC owners a little later in life than a lot of people. I figured that it was a good way to dip my toe in the DVC waters and get accustomed to how it works without too large of an outlay of cash, nor a large annual commitment in the form of MFs.

After just a couple of years, we realized that it wasn't enough points and we also wanted home resort advantage at another resort. At that point, we had one in college and one getting ready to go while the third was right on his heels. So, it's not like we were flush with cash at the time. I bought another small contract at BWV and had a total number of points to stay in a studio every year. That was a loaded contract with the previous UY's points banked. And I did what some would consider to be a rookie mistake - I booked a stay that spanned my UY and used almost 4 years worth of points to take my sister and brother-in-law to F&W, staying in a 2-bedroom standard view villa for 6 nights. I fell in love with the larger accommodations and having the full kitchen.

The following year, there I was, without points and suffering Disney withdrawal. I bought another small loaded BWV contract and planned another trip with just my sister for the following fall. Awesome trip and I would rather go to Disney with my sister than anyone else in the world! She gets it in a way that my husband doesn't.

Last summer, after some serious saving, I purchased a 150-point, loaded BWV contract and I booked a GV for F&W this coming fall, using all but a handful of my banked/borrowed points (but NOT spanning a UY!) . All 3 kids have now finished college and have begun their adult lives. I have randomly gifted them trips, using my points for studios for them and their friends over the last couple of years. I have also run into a situation where I had more points than I had time off (went on a Mediterranean cruise last year instead) and had to rent out some banked points in order to avoid losing them. The kids rarely vacation with us anymore because their schedules and ours rarely jive. So, we will be traveling with my sister, my brother-in-law, my brother and his girlfriend on this next trip.

Meanwhile, our daughter (who is now in her late 20's) has made it known that she and her boyfriend will be getting married within the next couple of years and will start their family right afterwards. So, we are now in the process of purchasing enough VGF points to be able to take them and any future grandkids every couple of years. When all is done, we will have over 600 points spread out over 3 resorts with a plan to bank/borrow at each in order to vacation every year at either BWV for F&W or VGF for early December and using the AKV points for short stays here and there.

So there's our story. Every purchase was made with cash, which is why some of the contracts are only 25-50 points. Every time that I thought we had enough points, I suffered from addonitis and went looking for more. I rarely book a studio for myself because I've become spoiled by the extra space, although I'll do it for a short stay with just my husband or sister.

I'm very early in my DVC experience. Bought a 50 pt loaded BWV contract in December that I was able to pay cash for. This will allow us to take our next 3 trips but we'll be borrowing for our spring 2019 stay. At that point I expect to know a little better whether I'd like to add on there or elsewhere. We're going to be staying in studios for the immediate future, but generally rent VRBO/airbnb condos for all our non WDW vacations - we like having the space of a 1BR and a kitchen.

We have two little boys (5 and 2). I am expecting to add about 150 points at AKV/SSR/OKW for a total of ~200, but will revise that number once we've had a few stays as members. I don't see us ever going down for more than a week at a time, or more than twice a year. We travel quite a bit, but we take all kinds of vacations and have zero plans to slow that down.

Thank you both for your replies. I think that 200 points at two resorts may fit our family for now. Large enough to work but small enough to be manageable without high MF.

In the years before DVC, I often would make up a spreadsheet and update it with cost/benefit data to determine if a DVC purchase was worth it. Since our children were young and we were content with hotel rooms, the spreadsheet always said the same. DVC vs cash was about even. What I hadn't planned on was my children growing up and needing separate beds. Suddenly a 1 or 2 bedroom looked attractive rather than a studio and all of my calculations previously were out the window. It's one bedroom minimum for us now. With my initial purchase of 150 pts we were able to go every other year, but I'm now adding on another 120 points and near as I can figure this should give us what we need to go once a year. So, 270 is the magic number for us.

We bought 200 points at BWV a few years go. We live in Tampa so we take a lot of weekend trips over and we love F&W so we got BWL. Just recently we realized we need more points. So after getting a nice work bonus we decided to buy 200 points at HH. We have family in the Carolinas and want to book HH in the summer so that was our choice for a second home. So now we will have 400 points, which I think will be enough but you never know. I definitely have addonitis. We do like the ability to help friends and family have a great stay at Disney. :)
