I haz the confuse. Does this thing actually go under water?

You're partially underwater, the portholes that you look out of are underwater but you're never fully submerged.

I don't know what their exact emergency procedure is but I imagine they have some way to get the subs back to the dock if something happens. Personally it's the only ride I won't go on, I get way to claustrophobic.

Yeah, this one is going to be a no from me. I thought it was like in a building and just PRETENDED to be in the water. So Nemo is out and I think Autopia is in.

There’s a viewing room it feels too closed in for you. I just don’t know where it is

We did the viewing room one time. We asked the CM at the entrance to the attraction and they directed us to the room (it's to the right of the main entrance, under the monorail platform). The story is that you've remained at the lab and are watching the video feed from the sub as it goes out. You'll see most of the same stuff as the guests on the ride, but without having to be in the sub. It's not as an immersive experience, but it's a good option for those that are claustrophobic or have trouble with narrow stairs.

Thanks. Tbh (and I know this is a controversial position), I'm not really a Nemo fan. I think many Pixar films are far superior, and I'm not sure my son has ever seen it, though he certainly recognizes the characters. I'm not sad to miss this.

I have a new question though! This time re: Autopia. My son is too short to ride alone. If I ride with him, can I operate the gas while he "steers"? (I know they're on a track... but he doesn't have to, lol).

Yes, that's what I've done in the past. I let the little one steer and I pressed the gas pedal. I learned two important things: 1) There really isn't any halfway with the gas (you pretty much have to fully press the pedal to move) and 2) I'm glad he can't drive a real car yet - he couldn't drive in a straight line! :rotfl:

Same and yes. I have only gone on Nemo once and said i will not ever go back on it again. I love Nemo and Dory but just do not care for this ride. I am not at all claustrophobic but just the thought of being underwater covered its a no or me. DD11 goes on it i we are at the park with other people that want to go otherwise it is not a must for her.

Autopia. DD is 11 and last year she went on by herself for the first time. We have always gone together while she steers and i hit the gas.

I think the best times #2 kid has ever had at disneyland was when we let him drive autopia. He's 5, and thinks it's hilarious that he can't drive in a straight line and is constantly riding that strip underneath.

:rotfl2: Love it!

I just experienced the viewing room for the first time last week. Thanks to helpful posts on here I knew what to ask for and do. You indeed walk through the Exit line toward the ride. Once there, tell a CM you would like to do the viewing room (I have heard this called both Observation Deck and Outpost so not sure which it is or if it matters. A CM should know what you mean :)) It took only a couple minutes before we were led into the room. There's 2 small benches (I don't think they had backs to them) to sit on while you watch.

I will also admit to not being a fan of Nemo. I preferred the original submarine ride. Anyway, the first ten or so minutes is NOT Nemo related. I don't remember if this part is also shown on the actual sub ride but I enjoyed it. Once the Nemo segments began I wish we had left. It was very loud (I need to be careful with louder noise as it can trigger a health issue) There are 2 clearly marked Exit doors but it never occurred to me that I could have gotten up at any time and left. I would like to watch again but next time will leave once Nemo starts. I believe the total running time was about 20 or so minutes? It definitely felt longer than my memory (from at least a few years past) of the actual sub ride. Like others, I don't care for navigating those steep stairs especially coming up. It can also be squishy inside the sub. Not claustrophobic but did feel somewhat trapped up against the (non exit) end wall. Viewing room much more pleasant not to mention a few minute wait instead of an hour!

How do you get out if there's an emergency?
The sub stays at the same level during the entire ride and the hatches are above the waterline at all times. Should something happen to prevent the sub from making it back to the dock passengers would have to exit to the top of the sub and get evacuated like any other broken ride vehicle.

I seem to be in the minority around here, but I personally love the Subs. It’s such a unique experience and one of the few dark rides in the park to tell a fairly complete story. I think I have such fond memories of riding the original as a kid that the nostalgia of it allows me to ignore the cramped seats and small portholes. I just stick my face in the porthole and enjoy it. Lol

The inclusion of Nemo for me is a good fit.

I can understand however someone with claustrophobia not enjoying it. The lagoon is probably no deeper than your average swimming pool but you are beneath the surface while inside the sub.

If claustrophobia is not an issue, I always recommend everyone try it at least once, even if it’s just to say they did it.

Just a heads-up/reminder, if you feel claustrophobic because of the packed-sardines feeling, you can ask for an extra seat :)

I feel closed in, too, but I can lean forward, look out the port hole, look up, and see the water line (less than 12 inches above the port hole), which made me less "stuck underwater" scared....

Once someone pointed out that you can ask for 2 seats, I enjoyed the ride SO much more! Then I had wiggle room for my booty, and a little extra space between me and stranger-kid-with-sticky-fingers-and-no-personal-boundaries kid ;)

I’m actually not a claustrophobic person, but I have water issues. Perhaps watching Titanic 4,000 times in a row as a teenager did some damage or something, lol. Anyway, I was totally fine with it when I thought I would be smooshed like sardines in a pretend submarine that was actually safely docked on dry land. Being in a submarine surrounded and submerged by water? I’m afraid I’d have a panic attack and they’d have to hoist me out the porthole like pp said! Autopia is a much safer choice :car:

The submarine never fully goes under water. If there is an emergency you walk out the same way you came in - the hatch on the roof.

The attraction is quite brilliant. The first part is actually tacky and poorly done, but then Disney uses its magic, along with technology, to impress. I don't want to give anything away but it left me with my mouth open wondering, "How did they do that?"

You are in a very small space. I asked the cast member if people get claustrophobic on the ride and his response was, "All the time."

Either ride is a far safer choice than driving your personal car. FAR SAFER.
I meant safer from the perspective of me suffering some sort of water-induced panic attack and having to climb out the escape route. However scary a ride might be, intellectually I know that they have been engineered, tested, inspected, tested, maintained, and tested some more, and that I'm probably more likely to become injured tripping over my own shoelaces getting off the ride.

But I still don't do water 😉
