Finding a decent, affordable car stereo

Hi,

I'm looking for a car stereo for DBF for his upcoming bday. Looking on BestBuy.com I'm seeing several stereos in the $75-100 range, which is what I'd like to spend.

The only things that I really am set on feature-wise are CD Player and Ipod jack. In case it matters, he does have nice speakers in his car. His car is a late 90's Honda Civic with only a tape player so he'll be really excited about this upgrade!

So Tech/audio minded DIS'ers....help a girl out here....I have no idea what makes a stereo good or bad!
For the record...I plan on having Geek Squad install the stereo...don't want DBF to have to do work on his bday just to make his present work!

I would probably get a gift card in this case so he can pick what he wants, not to mention that all stereos are not compatible with all cars. Sometimes they require special adapters are harnesses to work, so it might be better to pick one that doesn't require it? The install could cost more than the stereo itself, never had work done by BB, so not sure on what their rates for install are.

"Free" installation rarely includes the wiring harness and dash kit required to install the car. Sometimes stores like BB way overcharge for those items. I wouldn't be surprised if the cost is $30-$50 for both items.

Some units just have an aux input which people use for their IPODs. You use the controls on your IPOD and the screen.

Others offer a true IPOD input. You control the IPOD from your HU and the songs are displayed on your HU. Obviously this is what you're looking for.

I'd also check Crutchfield. They'll tell you what units will work on his car. Buy from them and the dash kit, wiring harness and detailed instructions are included. They have a number of units under $100 which will do what you want. Pioneer and Kenwood make decent units.
