If you have to download it from the Apple store, you get the Apple one - but I think it should already be on your phone, I thought it was preloaded. It's free.
We use this app all the time for phones and iPads.
Actually, it was used to recover my sons iPhone when the Poly maid decided to take it to her house.. We pulled it up and It showed us right where it was.. Cops showed up and recovered it.
We don't use it that much anymore, but we did when we first got our phones. We followed my daughters phone when she left it on the bus.
We had an app thru AT&T but the find my iPhone is more precise in the location. Although sometimes I wish it could tell me exactly where in my house my phone is because my memory isn't what it used to be.
It came preloaded on my iphone. The only thing is that if you turn it off on your phone, it can't be tracked. So if someone steals it and turns it off, it won't help.

The app looks like a green circle and says find iphone. If it's not already there, you'll have to download it. Which I think is what I did yrs ago... But we use it all the time for misplaced iphone/ipods. You open the app, put in your apple pw and it shows all the phones on that account and where they are (unless they are off). Pick the missing one, tap on it and it will give you a list of options. I've used play sound many times to find the ones missing behind the couch, etc.

Without entering your password? Are you running iOS 7 or above? I just tried it after reading your post and it immediately asked for my iCloud password.
To the OP there are other apps but upgrading to iOS 8 and using Find My Phone is the most secure IMO. Why don't you want to update? I really like it.
This most likely is a stupid question, but how would I open the app if my phone is lost/stolen? Are you supposed to put the app on your computer as well?

Definitely worth downloading. Not preinstalled, but when you set up a new iPhone, it is presented to download.
You can locate it, lock your iPhone, even wipe your iPhone if lost all remotely. iOS 8 introduced a new setting that will send/save the last location, but only if your battery is critically low, is either 20% or 10%
Has the locating functionality with some added features. My kids have their own Apple IDs and I set them up as friends through the app on both my device and theirs. Not only can you see where they all are at a given moment, you can see up alerts to tell you when they leave an area or arrive at an area.
And you can invite any of your iPhone using friends. Works great at places like Disney where it's easy to get lost or separated.
