May 25, 2003

breakfast- Bagels and Cream cheese and coffee in the concierge lounge at WL.

This was my birthday. We went to MK for Early Entry at 8am. We b-lined to space mountain, fast passed it on our way in (this was the smartest thing we did because by 9:30am MK was PACKED!!! We left around noon because the crowds were unbearable...went for a swim at the WL pool. The kids played with the twins they met the other day.

5/25, snack/lunch...much needed drink

My DH gave me a break and watched the kids at the pool while I got a snack. I grabbed a chicken wrap at Roaring Forks and ate half. It was just ok, I've had better things here before...but I just needed something to tie me over until dinner. I also had some mixed nuts from the concierge lounge.

The sandwich was a 6.

I went down to the pool and decided to get a banana daquiri. Well, I got carded and I didn't have my licence on me...but I was told if it really WAS my birthday the drink wason the house. I decided that it was worth the 6.50, so I went upstairs and got it. I've had better daquiris. This one wasn't very creamy, but watered down tasting. But for free...

The drink was a 5 1/2.

We showered early and went to Celebration. DH and I took turns walking through open houses with DD while DS was passed out cold in our minivan. We then went to the Contemporary for our favorite restaurant anywhere in the world...

5/25, dinner, California Grill

We had an EXCELLENT table overlooking MK near the observation deck end of the restaurant. Our waitress Wendy, also originally from CT was excellent to the end. She was very attentive, and never did we feel rushed. She was also very helpful in describing entrees that we hadn't had before.

We did not hold back on food...
They first bring their famous foccacia with olive oil (sprinkled with fresh pepper). I resisted a second piece knowing what was to come.

Next DH and I split a BBQ pork and coleslaw flatbread and a "samuri roll" which was tuna wrapped in nori and then dipped in tempura batter, flash fried and served with a wasabi cream and a taste of seaweed salad. These appetizers were very very good, however I enjoyed the pork spring rolls we had in February better. Also, I think I like the uncooked sushi better...it tastes more like sushi to me, cold and refreshing. I also liked the salmon flatbread better, but the BBQ pork was nice and in ample portion (someone could have this and a salad and call it a meal.

DH and I then had hearts of romaine with a creamy caesar dressing with battered fried shrimp. This salad was a 10. I ate only half though because I was slowing down. (the kids were coloring and snacking on goldfish and bread during this...they were so well behaved)

For our entrees DH had soft shell crabs in some delicious sauce (sorry don't remember) served over potato wedges and a veggie. I had the yellowfin tuna (recommended by Wendy) served rare, seared with sesame seeds and served over basmati rice in a thai coconut curry sauce. I think this is the best entree I've ever had at CG. The tuna was sushi quality...buttery and sweet, no fishy flavor in the least. The rice was nutty and flavorful, and the sauce...complex...danced on my tastebuds...slightly spicy yet mellow and even sweet at the same time. (can you tell I liked it!!!) Of course I couldn't finish, so DH obliged.
The kids had mac and cheese...this is NOT the typical mickey mac you get elsewhere...it was extraordinary. A creamy delight.

For dessert, DH and I split a warm Chocolate banana bread pudding (we've had this before) which has a gooey chocolate center and served with banana rum ice cream...heaven. The kids both had "sushi" which is gummy fish and rice crispy treats.

The only glitch...if you can call it that really was that our waitress didn't seem to know that it was my birthday, even though the hostess did...this was the second time this happened. I wasn't looking for hand-outs, but maybe a "happy birthday". I do not blame Wendy for this however.

Overall rating: 9 1/2 ...for food and service and atmosphere. We will make it to CG every trip. I would put it as a must-do for anyone.

Monday, 5/26, breakfast, Market Street Cafe

We hope to move to Celebration at some point...we just LOVE the town. DH and I on our "adults only" trips have eaten at MS cafe. We have always had a good meal. DH and I had omelettes with homefries and toast. The kids had pancakes that came with honey butter, yum. We also were given two HUGE mugs of coffee which hit the spot. Excellent service. Small hometown feel to the place.

Overall rating: 8, hope this becomes our weekend ritual when we move here someday!!!

A suggestion: visit Celebration. It is adorable...and there are lots of places to walk to (parks and such) and plenty of shopping. We also walked through the Celebration Hotel...it would be a gorgeous place to stay...

Well that's all for now...until July 2003...

Thanks very much for your reviews - I read all of them!

My birthday is this coming weekend - and I was thinking about running over for dinner one night.

After your review - I think it's definitely gotta be the CG! I better get on the phone for my PS now!!

CG really is a wonderful place, isn't it! It's become a must for us as well :)

As far as Celebration, we looked at it twice, and decided we didn't care for it at all. The atmosphere is too "sterile" for us...we're building a home in Clermont instead, plus saving $150K for the exact same home on twice the lot--plus we have a fireworks view from all three WDW parks from our lanai every night :p

Anne! What kind of snacks are you serving on the lanai? - Noel and I will be there for Ducklite's Fantasy in the Sky :D

I'll bring the wine.

Great reviews especially of the CG - my favourite as well.

I hve never been to Celebration but hope to visit soon. It sounds as if you really love htis place and I do hope that your dream of living there will come true soon for you guys.

BTW Anne what is a lanai and is Clermont near WDW then? Hey I'm from the UK so I'm not sure! TIA

Clermont is about ten miles due west of WDW. My house is up on a hill with an unobstructed view (and unobstructable :) ) of WDW.

A lanai is a fancy term for a back porch--mine will be screened in with a wet bar, gas grill, and minifridge built in.

Anne-
Sounds nice. I know what you mean about Celebration being "sterile", but actually we like the clean, storybook appearance of it...As far as prices are concerned, the houses there are still a fraction of what they are around here, so it's still a deal for us...

Fantasia Sam-
Thanks. It probably will be awhile though beacuse I'm in Grad. school and DH is in the family business...We might buy and then rent it until we're ready to move.

Great reviews! That tuna you had at California Grill sounds amazing, I'll have to remember that for next time! :)

Thanks for the great review of CG. We are going to be eating here on our next trip, and it will be my wifes birthday so we are really looking forward to it.

Enjoyed all your reviews. Great details on CG. I often have a flatbread and a salad for my meal. Was the beet salad still on the menu?

As a sidenote I thought the covenants at Celebration prohibited buying a property and using it as a rental. Is that not true? We've yet to get over there but read a few articles when it was under development. I really hope to make time to visit one of these trips!

Loved your reviews! Thanks for posting them!

I really want to look around Celebration on of these days. I've never been there before!

Thanks for the wonderful reviews.

I think Celebration is such a lovely place, have never eaten there before. Think we will be giving it a try in October after your review.

Great review!!
If only they had those Softshells when Mrs. U was there-----

BCV23-
I believe they did have the beet salad...but I'm not completely sure. As you know they change the menu often...

Regarding Celebration rentals:
Also, you can rent but long term leases only. In other words, you can't use it as a hotel room. I think the minimum term is 6 months. Many of the houses also have garage apartments as well.

Thanks for the explanation about Celebration!:D
