Sorry had to share this with someone...

My father in law passed today...:sad1:

Wish I could do something for my husband to make him feel better.

I've been on the phone all day with the Red Cross trying to get him emergency leave and it's ridiculous because he's stateside.

I'm so sad I can't go to NY with him to be there for him.

I'm sorry for your lost. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

As a former Red Cross employee I know the correct procedure is that someone where the death occured contact the local Red Cross Chapter there and giive them the information about the service member. They will verify the death and contact the Red Cross office at the installation where the service member is stationed. The Red Cross at the base will then contact the service member's organization to confirm the emergency.

It is the service member's unit which issues the Emergency Leave papers, not the Red Cross.

(I was in the Army when my father dies, and I was working for the Red Cross on Guam when my grandfather died. I know that is the correct procedure as that is how it worked for me. And my job for about 9 of my years with the Red Cross involved Service to Military Bases and Disaster Services.)

I'm so sorry and send prayers for your loss of your dear FIL, also that your DH can get leave. I feel your pain not being able to go be with your DH at such sad time, but try not to worry, he knows you will be with him in spirit and in his heart. Godspeed

I'm sure everything will work out - but it must be causing anxiety for you both.

You and your husband have my sympathy.

Thanks everyone...Yes everything went through with the Red Cross. It was just taking a while to get the death cerification.

Now we're just trying to get the money and his plane ticket together.

I appreciate the thoughts and thanks for responding...I just needed someone to talk to besides my husband for obvious reasons.

This is correct! OP, has your husband looked into maybe taking a HOP? They would be able to seat him first priority due to emergency (usually)? If not how about a MAC flight? I am glad that he was able to get his leave approved. I am so sorry for the lost of your FIL.

Thanks again guys...I just dropped him at the airport...he's on his way to NY...I'll definately miss him for the week and I wiish I could be there with him...

His family is CRAZY...His father's long term gf is insane...He has been convinced for the past few months she was trying to kill him. The boys wanted an autopsy...she said there was no need It's being done becuasse of course the boys have the say.

I just hope she has enough sense to not even MENTION any kind of money. But she will...I just hope it's not in front of my DH. He's already extreamely ticked at her. She had to nerve once they got FIL to the hospital to go through everything in his pockets and take off all of his jewelery. WHen my husband told me I thought maybe she needed ID and any info for him and doesn't want the jewlery to get lost...NOPE...She said she needed it cause she's his wife(she's not) and everything he had is hers........:sad2:

So...it's going to be interesting.

I'm sorry for your loss. When my grandfather died my uncle was in boot camp. He had no problems getting emergency leave. We were lucky. My other uncle was also in the Air Force and he was able to inform my uncle of his father's passing instead of the drill instructor doing it. Gook luck in getting your husband home.

 I'm so sorry you have to go through all of that with the nutty GF. Hugs to your family, and I hope that DH makes it to NY safe and sound.
