I just ordered my first Field Recorder. I ordered a Sony PCM-D50. It's sort of like a modern version of a cassette recorder. It has a pair of built in microphones and connectors for adding external mics. It is for making relatively high quality recordings outside of a studio.

My inspiration was video taping my son's school play last year. The video was nice (although I could have really used a second camera), but the sound was terrible. I kept thinking how great it would be if I could tap into the mixing board and record the sound directly off of the microphones the kids were using. This will allow me to do that.

It'll be fun to see what other uses I find for it. I can definitely see using it if I use a 5D Mark II to record video. I wonder if there would be enough uses to warrant taking it to WDW. Recording ride sounds? Shows? Quick interviews with the kids?

The one downside is that it uses memory sticks for additional memory (beyond the 4 gig built in). Memory sticks are one of the things that still give me a bad taste in my mouth when I think of Sony.

The other models that I considered are the Zoom H4 (much lower price, more features, harder to use, significantly lower sound quality) and the Edirol R-09HR (smaller, a bit cheaper, a bit lower quality).

I like the idea of on ride sounds if it picked it up decently. I enjoy watching roller coaster ride videos on youtube and such but the sounds are always just muffled wind roaring.
