Hey there.

I know this is not the most exciting subject - I apologize in advance... :lmao:

But as someone who normally tries to use food as fuel... I am concerned about getting enough fibre while still partaking in some of the not-so-healthy-fare.

After a few posts of this nature on the Tip board - I thought maybe others were of the same mind and hopefully some of you have already been there and worked out this problem! :thumbsup2

We are on the DxDP and I do plan on eating oatmeal in our room most mornings. I will take leafy salad where I can and eat my veggies... but I'm wondering if there is much in the way of wholegrains, legumes, berries that is readily available at the TS restaurants.

There is nothing worse than feeling gross your whole trip.

As suggested to me, I may bring a fibre supplement with me, but I do prefer to get my fibre from food.

Although I will be at WDW and do like to celebrate my food sometimes and won't not eat something just because it has no fibre... at least not on vacation to the World.

Delicious choices anyone can recommend?

We are like-minded. We plan on packing our own cereal (Kashi Go Lean), granola bars, & nuts to take with us.

I am hoping that some of the restaurants at least offer whole wheat, or multigrain buns/bread for sandwiches, & whole wheat pasta. I remember from last year that they do have plenty of fresh fruit available: bananas, apples, grapes, pears...

I am curious to see the response to this thread.

Don't most pasta dishes have a fair share of fiber??

And I always take a fiber supplement to WDW--just as a supplement, NOT as my whole dose of fiber. I use Fiber Force 6 from Puritans Pride

Check out the menu at The Wave at the Contemporary Resort. My entree that I had last year came with a white bean puree as a side dish. It was very tasty!

Contempo Cafe at the CR (the QS place on the concourse level) has some good sandwiches on whole grain bread. The grilled chicken one is excellent, and comes with a side of cold green beans! It's very light and tasty.

Also, I've noticed that a lot of the counter service places that offer a turkey or chicken sandwich, it comes in a whole grain wrap or on whole grain bread.

You can also buy loaves of 100% whole wheat bread in lots of the resort gift shops. Most all resorts have a toaster in a common area, so you can toast some up for breakfast. We did this on our last trip, even though we were staying Club Level, due to the lack of whole grain bread products in the lounge (we have a young son with intestinal issues and he needs a high fiber diet).

There are fresh fruits and veggies available at lots of outdoor food vending places. Apples are you best bet for high fiber. There is an utter LACK of berries on WDW property, though.

I will be buying my FiberOne bars before I get to the resort! I eat 2/day. Eating a lot of Fiber has helped me lose 50 lbs!

LOL A bit of an odd subject BUT I will tell you that I take flax seed capsules at each meal and well its better than any fiber pill or powder plus much better for you and not too expensive! It also helps to flush out alot of cholesterol. I wont go into detiial here tho..LOL

As a previous poster mentioned, I travel with my Kashi cereal. It fills me up and keeps me from eating rice krispies treats for breaksfast and helps keep things moving while on vacation.

Our first trip I was miserable :sick:a lot of it from the food choices i made so I totally "get" what you're saying...

Our second trip we were on DxDP and we chose to eat every breakfast at Cape May Cafe because (besides we were staying at the BC ) we could get oatmeal, tons of fresh fruit - a banana every day really helps, asparagus, whole wheat toast, a great big glass of skim milk, cold cereals, etc, in addition to the normal resort buffet fare: omelets, eggs, sausage, bacon, many different pastries, muffins, bagels, lox, breakfast pizza.
There was something for everyone, and i could eat lots of eatmeal with raisins...:rotfl:
I did feel good the entire trip.
This next trip w/out the DxDP we are eating cereal, milk and bananas in our studio and going for an early lunch.

On another note- I seem to also be sensitive to some oils used in commercial cooking. Egg dishes seem oilier at restaurants than at home, and CS, especially the POP food court, did not agree with me at all...:confused3

We found that some TS meals have more veggie content than others.
Not looking to go totally vegetarian, mind you, just want balanced meals...
So we really like Kona Cafe (pork chop, potatoes, nice portion of cooked greens; steak potatoes, nice portion of broccolini) and did not think that CG was well balanced (steak, potatoes, one teeny-tiny baby zuchinni).

Also like the Akershus dinner, which includes an appetizer bar with many choices from cheese and meats to veggie salads.
I hear Boma is really super for lots of veggies and look forward to trying that on our next trip! :thumbsup2

I noticed even a lot of the TS burgers had a better choice than fries too, like a cucumber salad...etc. I'm thinking I may take a few Vitatops with me....they should be fine unfrozen for a few days....and they have 6-9 grams of fiber in them, which is a good amount for a small snack.

Last year it was really really bad though....I was envious of those travelers that get travelers diarrhea LOL We actually had to go off site and get some meds from Walgreens....so this year we're really going to have to plan for some fiber (or I am, as I'm the only one that gets uncomfortable on vacation).

This is great to know. I did enjoy many food items that were not healthy but I did add healthy choices as well. Let's just say after the first 4 days of my vacation not feeling myself (if u know what I mean) I am willing to try anything.

Trust me you are not alone...I thought I was.

have you ever tried Kellogg's Fiber Plus bars ? OMG, they're amazing. We get the dark choc almond. They also come in peanut butter or choc chip. But they have like 9 gms of fiber per bar. We eat 1-2 each day.

But I think we're going to pack a few boxes just for "snacking". :thumbsup2

I too can relate to your situation, it's always nice to know you're not the only one. Disney is incredibly flexible if you let them know you have dietary concerns. They typically bend over backwards to accommodate your needs. I noticed when we ate at Tony's Town Square in March that they offer whole wheat pasta. Many places will also sub in whole wheat bread/buns. Also, like an OP said, there is typically an option to swap fries for another side. If you hop over to the AllEars site, you can also check out the menus for each restaurant. I have found that most every restaurant has a vegetarian option on their menu which typically involves lots of veggies.

I think you are very smart to bring your own breakfast. I have done this on every one of our trips, DP or not, and it has been a Godsend. It helps me so much to have a good start to my day to get up and going and enjoy the morning much more. Cereal with fruit or toast and PB stay with me much longer than a pastry!

I am guessing that you must have the opposite problem from mine...
I can laugh about it when I'm not traveling...:rotfl:
Ironically, both DH and I can eat the same food (like foods with lots of cheese) and it can affect us in completely opposite ways...:headache:
Oh well, they say opposites attract ... :lmao:

I used to think I was weird, too. Then I read an article about what is commonly called (SORRY!) Vacation Constipation, which is caused by being off your body's normal schedule and choosing poorly at mealtimes. I now make sure I have fruit first at every breakfast, and a salad as an appetizer at each dinner. I can usually find some side dishes with legumes and whole grain carbs. It's easy to eat fiber at WDW (I think I'll pack those Fiber One bars next time, too - we love the Dark Chocolate Almond).

:sunny:

When we eat at a table service restaurant I always look at the sides-that is where the veggies are. If you don't see steamed broccoli or asparagus or your favorite veggies but it is served as a garnish on a main dish just ask if the chef can steam you a serving or two of it. I hate when they use veggies as a garnish-the little split baby carrot or summer squash. (If they are putting them on the plate as a garnish they have them in the kitchen.) Add a salad and share a main dish protein with someone in your group. There are fresh fruit stands at every park. I think I often think "it is vacation" and eat crappy fast food or just too much food and then problems happen. We are DVC members and always pick up a loaf of whole wheat bread to toast and bring our favorite high fiber cereal/bars from home. When I am at a buffet I always take an extra piece of fruit or two for later-I always keep a ziplock or two in my bag for that bunch of grapes or whatever I could not eat that is toteable.
