FF D600 announced $2099 Sept 18th

Of all that the only thing that got my attention was controlling it with a smartphone. It's a really nice feature to have if you do a lot of work on a tripod. Especially in the studio.

Well have to see what the retailers actually sell it at. Amazon doesn't have it up for pre-order yet. $2099 is a bit to much for me. If it does come down and sells in the $1599-1799 range, then I may find a way to swing it

I really wouldn't mind a FF body. I LOVE my D300 and there is plenty of life left in it (almost 21,000 shutter clicks so far), but the D600 is tempting.

Was on B&H's web site today and they have it for $2099.00. Have not seen it any where else.

Authorized retailers can't sell Nikon products for less than a nominal amount off pursuant to agreement with Nikon. In this case, there's no reason for them to offer a discount, as this camera will be hard to acquire for months due to it selling so well.

In other words, if you're waiting for it to drop substantially in price, you'll be waiting a while.

I preordered mine as soon as it went live on Amazon!

I put it on my wish list. I have a D7000 right now. Will probable have to wait until Jan when I get my Bonus.

Should be a nice camera, it looks like a FX version of the D7000. Too bad they did not give it the focus module from the D800.

The D800 focus module would have been nice...

Price might drop $100.00 in a few months once Canon ships FF 6D. Assuming that they do...

I know a lot of people are disparaging the camera as this (or being an FX camera in the D7000 body), but it's pretty much what I want. I've been using the D700, and while it's an amazing camera, I notice a few areas where the older technology lacks something as compared to the D7000.

A new FX sensor in a body that's similar to the D7000? That sounds great to me.

All of the features of the D800 that it's lacking aren't all that important too me. I'm ESPECIALLY pleased that it doesn't have that absurd MP count. 24MP is even too much for me, but I realize it's difficult to get lower in today's cameras.

I wish it had a 1/250th sync speed, but if that's my biggest complaint (and it is), I think I'll manage with it just fine!

You will find that 36MP is far from absurd, on the contrary once you start to use it you will find that it is extremely useful. The D800 AF performance absolutely blows away the D7000 AF performance. It is faster and more accurate, there is no comparison. You also get more AF points across (I think) a larger area of the frame.

As you noted the faster flash sync is also very useful. I have mine set at 1/320. You also get more buttons, the "Pro" interface, and a more advanced meter. The level of detail captured by the D800 is stunning. Someone on your level should get the D800 or the D800E.

I agree. I was especially disappointed as the rumor on the street was that it would be around $1500 and I wanted to get full frame for my FX lenses. I am still using film and was hoping to go straight to FX, but at $2099 not for this camera. I am buying an older DX body to get into the digital domain, but will probably just spend $900 more for the D800 when the time is right. I figure I will have a lot of fun digitally with the new DX camera and get up to speed on LightRoom before I then move to FX digital (by that time perhaps FX will come down price).

If anyone noticed with Canon's annoucement of the 6D... it's priced around where the original 5D was. Which makes sense since the 5DmkIII is over a grand more now. I wouldn't hold my breath on full frame prices coming down anytime soon.

How so? In what situation would 24MP be inadequate?

Where did I say anything about inadequate? I said it was not absurd.

The 36MP D800 returns an incredible level of detail. Don't mistake the level of detail for an "absurd MP count". You will see things you never saw before in your photos, IMO it takes photography to a new level. I would not go from a D700 to a D600, the D700 is better in certain respects. If you want to shoot in DX crop mode for extra 'reach' (smaller FOV) the D800 will give you 16MP (like a D7000). The D600 drops down to 10.5MP.

My 5-yr old Q6600 Quad Core Windows box with 4 GB of RAM and 2TB of RAID1 has no problem handling the files, flash memory is cheap, and HDD space is cheap. I see no downside to the extra detail and resolution. Valid considerations would be cost, size, and weight.

You said that 36MP "is extremely useful." That would imply that there are situations in which the D800's higher resolution serves some practical purpose that can't be met with 24MP. I was merely curious as to what those situations might be.
