What is the typicial recovery time for a female dog after being spayed? What restrictions do they have? Our other dog is a male and so his recovery after being neutered was quick and his only thing to do was wear a cone. Thanks!

based on title thought you were gonna get points for this :lmao:

a female dog's recovery is a little longer than a males, since her surgery is inside, and his wasn't.

Keep her quiet ( I think it's like a week ) no jumping, keep her on a leash for potty breaks. Gauge her pain tolerance, sometimes it's better to only give enough med's to take the edge off, so they still realize they need to take it easy-it's hard to let a dog know they can't run and jump.

Your vet should give you adequate instructions when you pick her up.

She will come home with a cone & I as I remember you can't give her a bath for at least 2 weeks.

No swimming, jumping, playing rough or rolling on the grass.

We had a dog spayed years ago. She took it easy for aobut a week. About day 5 - the "skin glue" came apart, and no big deal - the vet just re-did it.

We were surprised that she didn't come home wiht a cone. The vet said most dogs do fine without it after a spay, and most get really frustrasted with it. There were times that we found her to be licking the wound. My DD took one of her t-shirts, and shoved if on the dog - i.e. front legs through the arm holes. And then, to "make it fit" she cut a straight line up the back, and then made little "ties", maybe two inches on each side, and then tied it up. Kept her from licking the incision.

That's interesting... when my skin glue came undone after a c-section they told me there was nothing they could do. We had to keep it clean and it healed itself from the inside out. That part of my scar was thicker than the rest.

As for spaying, with our first I remember she was a bit groggy for a few days. The first night was worst, and the only night we ever let a dog sleep with us in bed.

The most recent spay was about a year ago, and we managed to schedule it for the first day we were on vacation so she stayed at the vet to recover. (Of course they had emergency contact info and my mom was authorized to do whatever she felt was best for the dog should something go wrong)
