I just called FEMA because we still haven't received our emergency funds(the $2000 they are giving families to pay for rent and hotels, etc). Everyone I know has already received theirs so I haved called to see what is going on. Last week they said be paitent lots of people filed...

Well tonight the girl on the phone tells me that FEMA is "out of money" and they are no longer giving out emergency funds! I am so mad. We are trying to get back on our feet, and this money was going towards bills we couldn't pay while out of work. I am so mad. Do the rest of us not matter to FEMA?! I guess we should just leech off the govt but noooo we want to find work and pay our bills.

Sorry, I know this is probably ungrateful or whatever but I am so upset, it isn't fair.

I had heard something similar on the news - that those who got evacuated to shelters were getting $$, but those that had left themselves & went to hotels or to stay at family were being left out. I don't think that is fair - not everyone who went to a hotel has homeowner's insurance to help with temporary expenses.

So sorry that you are not getting the help you need! Have you had any luck with your job search?

That is just wrong! How can they be out of money?? Didn't Congress just pay $62 billion in funding? Ridiculous, but Lord knows we have no problem spending money in Iraq (they just approved $50 billion MORE to spend on the WAR)...can't even help our own citizens get back on our feet, jeesh.

And if they are out of money, how are their employees getting paid? How are they paying for relief work? How will they do anything when some disaster happens next month?

I think someone is BS'ing you...

I really hope that someone is bsing me. The way she said it was like they were out of the emergency funds money....
I am just mad and hopefully we can get this worked out.

They may be out of relief money ie money to give to evacuees they will always have money for pay and relief effort workers etc not necessarily the people that they were supposed to give money to after evcuating them.

Stephanie, I'll PM you tomorrow, I might have some good news :)

I know it just frustarates me because they never seem to run out of money for the things THEY want. I mean we can't afford to give out $2,000 grants, yet we can spend hundreds of billions in Iraq? Makes no sense.

Maybe they should just ask the president for more money....throw in the word "terror" and they should get what they ask for ;)...I can just picture it.

FEMA humbly TERROR requests an additional $500,000,000 to give out TERROR TERROR WAR ON TERROR grants to those affected by the TERRORIZING
Hurricane Katrina.

This sounds familiar. We went through the same thing last year with Charley. I don't know one person who got a dime from FEMA.

But that's what aggrovates me...Both my uncles got it, my BIL got his, and his girlfriend, who isn't even American(she is Chineese) got hers, and my grandparents. I don't begrudge them, it just agrivates me. At least the people in shelters got theirs first, FEMA went to them and gave out $2000 debit cards. We would like to move on and this would have made it easier, which is what it's purpose is.

I am so sorry that you are going through this! I was just watching a report on CNN about Hurricane Katrina and Rita and was very surprised to hear that Michael Brown is still on FEMA'a payroll. He is being paid to be a consultant. He will be a consultant for FEMA on its' investigation into what went wrong during Katrina. Am I the only one who thinks that this is crazy??!!!

They are not out of money. Lots of people I talked to today got a 2nd check from FEMA for $2358. It was deposited in their Checking accounts. I got my $2000 check a week ago. But it was mailed to Atlanta and my friends had to mail it to me.

I think some frazzled girl in a call center some where is selling you a load of crap.

Wonderful, so some people are getting a second check while I am still waiting for the first??

Seems crazy to me to. I just can't understand it.

I'll get flamed for asking....
but what exactly entitles anyone affected by Rita to a single dime from FEMA ?

Did the folks in Florida get money because of the multiple hurricanes that hit them last year ?

You see, buying that nice house on the coast in a warm weather state is a risk that no one is forced into.

Actually, a lot of people have gotten help from FEMA. The distribution has been poorly executed and unequitable. And many people in Florida did get help from FEMA last year. In fact some folks got help even though no hurricane came near their county.

FEMA paid out $22,000,000 to 9000 people in Miami-Dade that had no hurricane damage.

My boyfriend's parents got their $2000. They have been staying in hotels.

Ouch!

The OP had her home destroyed in Katrina.

The hurricanes affect more than those on the coast lines. Insurance only offers so much.

FEMA's purpose is there to help.

The next time your home is destroyed...I hope you save our tax dollars from someone else.

totally uncalled for post!!

And this person in Florida--who lives on the coast who had two hurricanes hit--suffered no significant damage....didn't even submit a claim to my insurance except for food spoilage. So I didn't collect one dime from FEMA.

ETA: You do realize that WDW that you never get enough of is located precisely in a location that you are condemning?
