I was planning to sail with my two children with a Disney Cruise on the Dream this September, in celebration of my daughter’s 4th birthday. We sailed last April for my sons 12th birthday on Norwegian. Overall the NCL cruise was nice however there was very little for the kids to enjoy. I figured Disney would be an ideal option this time around. We live in Los Angeles so Disneyland is right in our backyard (almost). I’ve taken the kids to Disneyland and they enjoyed it, so I thought I’d a Disney cruise would be a big hit.

After taking a peek at other cruise line prices I realized I could sail longer with Royal Caribbean for two thousand less than Disney. I canceled my reservation with Disney and am planning to book with RCL on the Majesty for September 2016. I am hoping that that the dry dock of the Majesty and all of the updates to the kid’s pool area will make it a wonderful trip for the kids.

I can’t help but feel guilty for switching the reservation. I told the kids we were going on Disney, the 4 year old may not understand; yet my son will be slightly disappointed. Even I was looking forward to the Disney Cruise experience.

Well I would focus their attention on the excursions you can book will your new savings, maybe even a pre/post Disney experience? You can have a pretty fun time there with the extra $$ as well? Have you considered one of the bigger class ships? DD enjoyed Oasis just as much/possibly a bit more than her cruise on Fantasy. I'm guessing you are doing a 4 day on Majesty? With your savings maybe consider 7 day on Freedom?

I wouldn't feel guilty at all. I have not been on a cruise. The promise to my family is DCL will be our first cruise. My parents, when alive, lived in a gated, mostly retired neighborhood in south FL. On one of their cruises, they were talking with the person that does bookings before getting off. The got to talking and she told my dad that they always have last minute deals. He gave her his card. A few weeks later, she called and told him they have rooms available for $250 per person double occupancy for a cruise 10 days out. Dad asked her how many rooms were available. Long story short, they put the cruise info on their community tv channel. They booked 20 rooms that morning, the cruise line sent a bus to take them all to port, and they got a $200 room credit each ($500 for the cruise - $200 ship credit). They started going on cruises once a month at that price and many of them were that low or not much more.

Don't feel guilty, enjoy it.

I wouldn't feel guilty either. Just use it as a practical math "story problem" to show your DS the value of being thrifty. If he helps choose a nice shore excursion with the $$$ you saved, he should be fine with missing out on the mouse.

absolutely nothing to be guilty about- you are taking them on vacation! enjoy

With the money you saved, you could do a few days at Disneyworld before (or after) your cruise, and give them both experiences.
