Blondie, the way it works in my hospital for the HIPPA regulations, is that each patient is assigned a confidentiality code, those that know it are able to be given info. Talk to your dad and find out how the hospital your mom is in does it. You should absolutely be able to be given info about your mom if she agrees to it. Best Wishes and prayers for your mom.

I am glad that TeresaNJ posted before I got to the thread. I help regulate HIPPA compliance for the researchers at our university and TeresaNJ has given you very good advice. As long as your mom authorizes the hospital to release information you will be able to get it--talk with your dad and the hospital to find out their procedures.

Thank you all so much!

I finally got word from my brother, who told me she had a perforated diverticulum. She'll have a colostomy bag for a few months, then they'll go back and "open up the plumbing" so to speak, and then she'll no longer need the colostomy bag.

She's on a surgical unit now, and on a Morphine PCA. She sounded good when I talked to her a little bit ago.

I'll e-mail her this thread, so that when she is discharged, she'll be able to read all the prayers.
