Finally, after last week's cool, rainy weather, we had a very hot and sunny summer day today. So we headed out to our swim club.
In the late afternoon, a man swam up to me and said, "I know you." It was a boy (well, he's not a boy anymore) who dated the girl who lived next door to me in my teens.
I hadn't seen him in years, and so we chatted a bit. Then he said, "Did you hear about who died last week? Bobby Lee."
It was like a punch in the gut.
Bobby was a friend from my high school class. I've seen him maybe once or twice since HS, but I remember him fondly. He was a great kid. Nice, funny, smart and from a wonderful family.
He had to be 42 years old. He left behind a wife and two kids, ages 6 and 2.
I didn't know his wife, but I imagine she's devastated now.
It was a heart attack that took him. He was always an athlete, tall and lean, so I doubt very much it happened as a result of his not taking care of himself. I'd guess it was something that malfunctioned in his heart, like my cousin Donna's in February.
