I'm feeling so down in the dumps, so forgive this post!!

I've been working on my dissertation ("How are Sex, Sexuality and Gender Portrayed within the Disney Canon?") for what feels like forever. I'm so fed up of writing it! I only have one chapter and a conclusion left to go (Then only editing and trimming) but I just can't muster up the power to do it! I can't sleep at night 'cause I'm so stressed out about it, but then I can't work properly through the day because I'm tired!! After that I have to do an email presentation and two 4,000 word essays.... I'm also very aware I need to find a job for when I graduate, and then as soon as I have a job we need to find somewhere to live (I'm not starting married life in one bedroom in my Mums house!).... I just feel totally stressed out and want to flop in a corner and cry. :sad1: What makes me feel even worse is when people say I'm not trying hard enough- I'm spending nearly every waking moment either working or filling in an application form for a job.... I just want to scream my head off!!!

Sorry for the rant.... :sad2:

Ah sorry you are having a rough time Bob, just take each day as it comes, make yourself a day plan and put all the things you need to do in it, vary your tasks so you keep motivated and give yourself breaks to chill out, when I did my dissertation (How and why has war reporting changed over the 20th Century in Britain?) I played Free Cell (card game) on my computer to give myself a quick break every hour.

 I totally understand what you're going through. Dissertations are such hard work and they are utterly draining. I was in tears a lot that last month. You will definitely get through this.

I don't know if you've done this but when I was getting towards the end and could not fathom reading another statistic, article etc I sat down and worked out a schedule for completing it, nothing too heavy, and it worked out ok. I then took 2 days off, did absolutely nothing on it.

One tip though, I left little time for editing, polishing and typing up (and I type over 100wpm!) and I waas up until 5am getting my references all done before it had to go to the printers so I wouldn't leave that until the last night :goodvibes

Don't listen to the doomsayers and negative people who say you aren't doing enough, you're probably doing too much and are burning out. Hang in there, it feels AMAZING when that dissertation is done and then you won't ever have to look at it again :rotfl: Mind you I did go back and read it about 7 years later - it was pretty good!! (A comparative study on the case assessments and prosecutions of rape in the UK and the U.S.).

I totally understand Bob - I had to do two dissertations one for my degree and one for my postraduate qualification - it was a nightmare!

I used to give myself an hour a day to chill out and get away from the dissertation and job hunting - go for a walk/swim/read a book - but keep away from wherever you are doing you dissertation as it will remind you of it!

It will be all over soon :yay: - your a very brave person taking on a wedding. finishing your degree, and house and job hunting - you deserve a pat on the abck just for that!

 I totally understand what you are going through I have been going through exactly the same thing for the last few months for my own final year it really is tough, just keep going it will all be over soon.

I am half way through mine at the moment, trying to get it done by next week, as I have exams to study for too, good luck.

I've no idea how you must be feeling right now but will send on a hug & pixie dust to cheer you up :grouphug: pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:

I remember the sleepless nights only too well. You sound like me - you know you need a break but you can't afford to take one because you have soooooo much to do. My way around this is to write down 2 things (maximum of 2) that I would like to achieve by the end of the day. Sometimes it's as simple as paying a bill or making a phonecall. Once I have achieved those 1 of those 2 things, I feel like I have earned a small break. This method helps me to avoid 'headless chicken' mode - I get things done more slowly but I am less stressed and probably achieve more because I can focus. If you try to do it all, you invariably end up achieving very little. Small steps and all that.

You will get there hun, just remember that it will be worth it in the end when you graduate and then become a married woman with letters after her name.:goodvibes

What's a Disney Canon?

Think of it as being like the Disney Vault of films... Canon is just a word I was advised to use!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Keep up the hard work Bob, it will pay off in the end:hug::hug:

Keep up the good work!!! It will pay off in the end and it will feel soooo good when it's out of the way and you can concentrate on the other important things!!

 keep going Bob x

Hang in there Bob, you have almost finished:hug:

Hang in there, Bob. The second time round is much easier. The dissertation I had to do as an undergraduate was nearly killing me. I took my postgraduate dissertation in my stride and I was teaching full time at the same time with all the planning, marking, etc. The irony was that I also got a much better mark in my postgraduate dissertation even though I did not take this even half as serious as the first one.

Thanks everyone... I'm feeling a bit more positive today.... :grouphug:
