When we went away last week, the resort had daily activities, for kids and adults. One for the adults was a math challenge. The man running it gave my 9yo DS permission to try it, because my DS told him it looked "easy". He finished it 3rd out of about 15 adults. :woohoo:

So, the man invited him back for the math story puzzle, and the kid came in 2nd this time. He won a prize (a free game of billiards) and can't wait to go back next year! LOL.

Some of you like to be challenged, so I thought I would throw it out there. here it is, you read the story, then answer the questions:

Grandma Bella had a farm house and a chicken coup. Also, she had a dog named Red, a cat named Lerouge in charge of the pest control. A favored productive hen named Blanche and a rooster, of course, named Eggnog who contributes to the prosperity of the farm and keeps the coup in control. He is very punctual, as time is of the essence. However, Grandma Bella collected the organic eggs daily. She used them in her cooking and baking. She put the rest in a basket for sale. One day, despite the limited amount of eggs, she went on the road to sell what was in the basket. Of course, Red was escorting her after he had his cheese omlette with bacon and hash browns.
Meanwhile, they had to walk several miles. The distance was twice the number of eggs in the basket. Bella felt the trip was not worthwhile. But active Red kept her going and had to stop at each fire hydrant across the towns. At the first stop, Grandma Bella sold half of the eggs + 1/2 egg. At the second stop, she sold half of the leftover eggs + 1/2 egg. At the third stop, she sold half the remaining eggs + 1/2 egg. Red wanted to continue and find more fire hydrants, but the basket was empty and sold out. They had to return to the farm.

Now that you have enjoyed the short story of Grandma Bella's journey and her eggs, please find out:

1. How many eggs were in her basket when Grandma Bella started out?
2. How many miles did she and Red walk?
3. How many fire hydrants did Red stop at?

Answers below so as not to give it away if I'm right, or lead anyone astray if I'm not. ;)

1. How many eggs were in her basket when Grandma Bella started out? 7
2. How many miles did she and Red walk? 14
3. How many fire hydrants did Red stop at? 3 (unless they stopped at more on the way home).

How'd I do?

That's what I got too.

Incidentally, I think it's cool that her cat and dog have the same name (in different languages). :cool1:
