Feedback on school

I was in a portable with no windows for a class in high school. I didn't have a problem with it. But I wonder what it would be like to be there all day long. Maybe the teacher will let them have a few more "breathers" outside, or keep the door open for fresh air on nice days.

In the end, I think your son will be fine.

Denae

they will not be their all day long. Normally they leave class once a day for electives, again for recess, then lunch. They are allowed to go to the library whenever as well.

Our school is at nearly twice the capacity it was built for so there are lots of portables. Entire grades are in them.

Ours have windows but no runnning water. The main building classrooms have a sink and drinking fountain. Other than that, they are ok. My big issue would be where you live. Dealing with "the elements" is not much of an issue here in Southern California. The kids eat outside, the bathrooms all open to the outside anyway. But in PA you get winter. Unless the portable is only steps from the main building, the kids are going to be cold going back and forth for all bathroom breaks/lunch/library/etc or have to deal with having their coats along.

I don't think your dh is out of line. But since he feels more strongly about it, have HIM make the call. :thumbsup2

Hello,
I am looking for opinions on a dispute between DH and I.
Our son is entering third grade, his elementary school is hosting students from our district’s other elementary school while they all remodeled.
This resulted in auxiliary class rooms (trailers) being used to accommodate the overflow. My son’s third grade class will be held in an auxiliary class room and his teacher is from this other school.
My DH is very angry; he feels that our son should be in the building. Out of 8 third grade classes, three are in these trailers.
Personally, I do not see an issue here, I believe that he will receive the same quality education as students in the building and he will have the added experience of the trailer.
Dh wants me to call and demand them to place our son in another classroom. I said no way. He keeps going on about how I am wrong, am I?
Seems to me as the two schools are being treated as one unit for this school year. My daughter went to a school that was entirely portables for a year. The year before she went to a school that housed them and the host school but they were treated as separate schools. We had our teachers and they had theirs. They wanted to put the kids back to the home school in old portables midyear but the parents refused to allow it to the extent of going to the district superentendent of schools.
My advice is go with the flow. I would ask why the doors are left unlocked. Down here the doors are locked for security reasons as anyone can walk onto school property.

No bathroom?
Yea, that would be an issue for my dd who has bathroom issues.
I would say something based on that. I would get medical deal sent to the school and force the issue.

Now if that is not an issue for you then I probably wouldn't worry.

Tell your husband that often things that seem bad turn out to be the best thing ever!! Those trailers have great a/c for hot summer days and the kids will have fun! We have a high school here that only has windows at the doors. The kids don't seem to mind. I would hate it. Our classroom trailers have windows. Are you sure yours do not?

Trailers/portables usually mean air conditioning...it's a good thing!

Do they have working AC and heat? .

At one of the schools in our district, the actual school building does not have AC, but the auxillary trailors do. All the kids want to be placed in those classrooms, not the main building.

My self-contained classroom is in a mobile. I wouldn't trade for the world! Not only do I have my own heat and air, I get to control the temperature, which is a huge bonus.

We don't have a bathroom, but I haven't had a problem with kids walking in to use it. We're not in there all day. We have lunch, PE, library, exploratories, and sometimes just go for walks on nice days.

It would be every teacher's dream to be able to control the temp in their room. When our twins were in kindergarten their classroom was the first room off of the boiler and it was HOT in the winter. Their teacher sent a notice saying NOT to buy long sleeves for winter and to send a zip up sweatshirt to keep in class if needed. It is so hard to keep a constant temp in a large building like a school so some rooms are hot, some are cold. I learned to ask the teacher before I did any school shopping :lmao: .

I don't blame them!:goodvibes

also survived the portables:) . They had much more room than a regular classroom and participated in everything that came up inside the school building so they never felt left out.

Honestly, I thought with them being away from the hustle and bustle it was a more enjoyable learning environment.

The best part was their mobiles were air conditioned and the regular school was not. It was a hot spring and they were very happy.

Our school is beautiful and modern, the other school is a hole. It is funny they are remodeling. The cost is higher then a new school, but the town uppity ups are all about things staying the same on the outside.

Our school each grade has their own wing, so if there is no room in the wing your in a portable.

I have called to have a tour, they are still not tour ready, if it is any way horrible I told my husband I would let them know.

My dh does not understand why the school just won't move the art classes and music class to the trailers. I told him to call and ask, he replied "thats a mother's job."

I think your son will find the different setting enjoyable. As for the teacher, I am sure she is certified to teach 3rd grad. Don't make any waves unless you see that it is hurting your son's learning in some way.

Personally, I resist micromanaging my childrens lives. Don't blow something out of proportion until you have reason, LOL. I'm sure he'll be fine. She is probably a wonderful teacher who will make the best of the "not perfect" environment.

FWIW, NONE of our classrooms have restrooms in the class and NONE of the classroom doors are locked. No A/C either, and we live in Hawaii where it's 80 everyday.

Send him and let your DH contact the school if he has a problem. He (your DH) needs to learn to be more assertive if he is so upset about this. ;)

If only we were 80 everyday we won't need A/C. Unfoortunately we can get to the mid to high 90s in August -October. A/C out and we go outside so we can at least get a breeze.

everything is a mother's job .... according to him.
I quit biting my tongue the third time he said it 9 years ago, now I am trying to bite his OFF

I would just tell him if he wants to know it is HIS JOB to find out and don't do anything.

OP is from PA.

I'm from Ohio and Florida (we moved when I was in HS) and none of my schools in Ohio had A/C but all my classes in Florida did, for obvious reasons.

He who has an issue is the one to call and learn more. Otherwise, no matter what you do, he will criticize.

Get a squirt gun, every time he has something negative to say, squirt him:thumbsup2
