Fee to check carry on at the gate?

I have a question about carry on luggage. If you are in the last boarding group and there's no more space in the overhead bins, do they charge you the baggage check fee to stow it below? Btw, I'll be flying Continental if that matters. Thanks!

No. I've had that problem with Continental, too. I took whatever I didn't want to get lost out of my bag and moved it into my purse.

A tip, save any extra Mag Express yellow tags that you are not using, and put it on a carry on at the last minute. It would save you the hassle of going to the carousel to pick it up. Also, call Continental and ask how they board, and then get your seat assigned in the section that boards first, you're almost guaranteed space in the overhead.

No. In fact, when I flew on Delta in July, they started announcing way before boarding that the flight was full, and out of concern for space in the overheads, they were looking for volunteers to check their bags for free.

If the bag is within the carryon dimensions, no charge will be levied if the bag did not fit due to no room in the overhead compartments. If, however, the bag exceeds the carry on size, a charge may be incurred.

No charge. It's their fault there's not enough space, not yours. Just pack your carry on like you would if it was going underneath. I packed a glass candle once between my clothes, and totally forgot about it when they told me it would have to go underneath. It got broken pretty badly. However, the second candle handled just well underneath because I packed it better.

As long as your bag is within the parameters for carry-ons, you won't be charged.

As long as your bag fits carry on size, they won't charge you. Just make sure that anything you need with you on the flight (books, meds, etc) or anything you don't want getting lost/damaged stays with you. You can put things like that in a smaller bag that fits under the seat and just gate check the larger bag if needed.
