If I switch to a different restaurant on the same day as my ressie will I be charged the canceling fee? This has never come up for me but wondered if anyone has experienced this.

This is what you can do according to Disney’s rules:
Change the original ADR to another day in the future and then cancel it. This of course is dependent on a future ADR being available.

You can always just make a brand new reservation, and change the other one to a further out date and then cancel it.

Just to be clear we are talking about ON THE DAY OF THE RESERVATION changing that reservation to a new future date/time and then being able to cancel without penalty? Interesting

Yes, day of. Best to do in the morning if it’s a dinner for instance.

You don't have to jump through any of those hoops. I've cancelled same-day many times and they waive the fee as long as you have a legitimate reason (kids are melting down, transportation problems, etc.)

I have both changed it to the future and cancelled it and also called when one person didn’t go due to food poisoning but the others isn’t he party still went. Didn’t have a fee.

I seem to remember last time I tried to modify a reservation on the day of, the system wouldn't let me and it said I needed to call. I called and said we had decided to go to a different restaurant instead (which was true) without offering any excuse. I got a bit of a lecture and the CM told me that she could have charged me the fee (which I would have been OK with as I had broken the 24-hour rule) but she waived it anyway.

If you get too close to your reservation time, it will not allow you to modify to another date. You also run the risk of not being able to find a reservation further out that has an opening (places like Space, 'Ohana, SciFi, etc are rarely available on the whim to even move a reservation to).

Calling Disney is not a good plan - the waits are 1-3 hours + sometimes, you call and the message is "call back later" because the queue is so big.

Pre-COVID, calling was easy. Not right now....

I tried to call and cancel a same day Mama Melrose reservation because circumstances required us to leave a day early. No option to wait; just call back later. We went to the front desk at CBR and they did it for us. A few days earlier we tried to call to reserve a Polar Patio and the wait was quoted as over two hours just for someone to answer.

I have a number of times in the past called from my room in the morning and switched a dinner reservation for the evening and got no cancellation charge. They apparently are fine with your switching restaurants rather than just cancelling. Note, however, I have not done that since pre-pandemic when there was no such thing as a significant waiting time for someone to answer.

This is true. Otherwise, if you wait too late, the link disappears and you are forced to call.

I find it comes in quite handy for moving ADR times UP (same-day).

Yes, that is allowed, we've done that before. If you just don't show up, most likely you will be charged the no show fee.

We did this multiple times last trip with no issues. As long as you are changing to another Disney restaurant there is no fee. Of course that was years ago so I can't guarantee that it hasn't changed.

One time I called the dining number and was able to change our day-of reservation to a different restaurant. I explained our reason (we didn't want to leave the magic kingdom to eat at a resort, we wanted more park time), and they let me switch it to a magic kingdom restaurant with no fee.
