I heard on the news this morning that an additional $l0 fee per airline ticket will be tacked on to your ticket starting next month. This fee is to cover airline expenses for security.

Anyone else hear this?

I heard about it, just didn't know when it was going to start being added to ticket prices.

If I have to pay additional $$$ to the airlines for security, I sure hope they PROVIDE some security. Except for Army/National Guard types with rifles, I really didn't see any beefed up security on our trip last month. Sure, there were random (computer generated) carry-on bag checks, but these appeared to be pretty brief. Until the airports stop charging the airlines for anytime AFTER scheduled departure that the plane sits at the gate, I don't think we'll really see any serious investigation of carry-on baggage, agreement of head/bag counts, etc.! Maybe the $$$ will go to the purchase of those high powered x-ray machines to investigate checked baggage?

I have also just heard about this as well...I don't mind paying the extra fee as long as they provide some security, as Leebee stated!

I read this in the paper which I threw out yesterday. As I remember, It takes effect with tickets purchased beginning Feb 1. I think it said something like $2.50 per plane boarding with a maximum of $10 per round trip. If you make one connection each way you'll pay the $10. Non-stops would only pay $5. It also stated that this was to partially cover the security that is now being done and/or planned to be done be the federal government.

I don't mind paying more for security. my complaint is why don't they get ride of the fuel surcharge since fuel costs have dropped back down.

I too hope that this fee will go for what it is supposed to! I won't go into details, as I don't want to give anyone any ideas, but on our last trip, I could have easily smuggled a weapon on board. I didn't even realize the breach until we were through the security checkpoint, and I certainly wasn't about to call it to their attention and earn myself a search! But it didn't make me feel especially comfortable. We are flying again on 1/17, so it will be interesting to see if things are still the same...there were no lines last time around and the airport was eerily empty, even though it was Thanksgiving weekend.
