Our school district just started school today after a 7 day strike.

They have said that school will be in session on President's Day. I thought schools had to close on Federal holidays? Anyone have any insight?

Thanks.

My kids do have off President's day off, but not necessarily all Federal Holidays. They never have Columbus day off.

"Federal government holiday observance (for federal employees, including military) is established by federal law. 5 U.S.C. 6103 establishes the following public holidays for Federal employees: New Year's Day, Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington's Birthday (President's Day), Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

This federal law does not apply to state and local governments. They are free to determine local government closings (including school closings) locally. As such, there is no legal requirement that schools close...."

My DS's school doesn't close for President's Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day or Martin Luther King Day. So I'm going to guess that schools don't have to. I think it's only for government employees.

you have answered my question. That's why the DIS rocks:thumbsup2

Nope. Not required on Federal holidays. One school I went to even had classes at times on State holidays, which is supposed to be a no-no, but we always had a special assembly that day to discuss the event. (Like, MLK day we'd have a Civil Rights themed assembly, etc.)

I'm guessing you're not referring to a public school?
Just curious.

Public schools don't have to close for federal holidays. Public school employees are not federal employees, heck most of them aren't even state employees. Our old district would alternate MLK day and President's Day off. In MN if they have school on MLK day they have to do lessons about MLK but they don't have to take the day off.

I know...but I'm just curious. I find it unusual that a school system would have ALL of those days off.

I'm still peeved that we don't get state holidays off. I would love to get Evacuation Day (day the British left Boston, March 17th) and Patriots Day (day the first shot of the Revolutionary War was fired, April 19th).

Sorry that you have to go on President's Day.

Storzo is in NJ and so am I. I have to say I'm surprised his/her school isn't closed for MLK or Presidents Day. All the districts in our area have both those off. Most use Presidents Day as the spring board to a mid-winter break. We have Tuesday off as well. Other districts have Friday and Monday off.

We don't get Columbus Day or Veterans Day off either.

Here in Osceola County we get Rodeo Day off on the 15th but have to go to school on President's Day.

Local government rules.

We are in NJ but don't get a midwinter break. I wish we did. That said we do have most fed holidays off but one year we had school on MLK Day. It is definitely not required off

HA!

You got 7 days off for a strike. My district (public school) in NJ has school on Veterans Day, Columbus Day, Good Friday, Presidents Day.

We do have off for Martin Luther Day. We also have off for Jewish holiday (Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur) but most districts don't have off for those days.

We have no mid winter break and next year we have a small spring break that is only four days (2 day split on two school week).

No, our school is open Monday, Presidents day...

She said they DON'T have them off. Our current district had a day off everytime the wind blows it seems. We get WAY too many days off and end up going to school 1/2 way through June. I would prefer NOT to have the days off then and have a longer break over the summer.
