Total Disney newbie here. We want to tent camp at Fort Wilderness in February... is this doable?? Or will it be too chilly at night??

Completely doable. I've tent camped in Florida in the winter, and it is very pleasant. Just bring along a little heater in case the temps dip lower at night. Last time I tent camped, the lows dipped into the 40's some nights, but that was just a freak cold stretch, and not the norm.

Thanks, I appreciate it! People keep telling me it’s not a good idea to tent camp in Disney, especially in February. But it’s so much cheaper, and I think it will be fun!

Most people think February is always cold just because it is in many states. Our cold period(s) can happen any time from around Thanksgiving - the first 2 weeks of March. As the chart that @buzznina posted shows last Feb was moderate to warm and most February's are similar due to our weather patterns.

But do they say why? Have they tried camping in Central Florida in winter?

Hi, I'm going to recommend you visit the camping boards on the Dis. FW has its very own section on Dis separate from the other resorts. You get lots of information & regular campers post over there.

I've tent camped at FW twice (once flying in & once driving in) & I will say that with discounts throughout the year on other resorts (namely values) & usually no discounts on tent sites, I would never describe them as "so much cheaper.". The desire to camp will have to be greater than a cost advantage, as there isn't much of one.

Some considerations that have made me move away from camping there are that Values offer more square footage than a tent, I get my own bathroom steps from my bed in the middle of the night, & I can temp control easier. The bus transportation from a Value is far superior to the 2 modes req at FW (if you plan to rent a golf cart to eliminate 1 mode, then you will pay more than a Value).

Now, FW is certainly fun & if you want to try it fine, I just don't think finances can be the deciding factor.

I recommend you tent camp several times to make sure of your equip needs & how you'll handle rain & meals & such.

It *can* be literally freezing, sure. But that’s not the norm.

I’d rather camp then than in the heat!!!

I was a scout in Florida for years. We camped every month except June/July/August. There could be a freak cold snap in February, but I've camped in far worse up north. If you have decent sleeping bags, you'll be fine. Bring the inexpensive emergency blankets just in case.

I'm sure the average temps in Feb. are very pleasant camping, but be prepared, as temps from one year to next can vary a lot. We've gone twice in various years in Feb. and between cold rain and wind froze. We won't go anymore then. We were in mh, not tent.

Doable.

Plus there is an entire DIS Forum on all things Fort Wilderness. They are they experts. Why not check in over there? I know for a fact that pictures, opinions, and testimonials are over there.
