When do your kids have school vacations?

In Maine & Mass I think Feb vacation is 2/15-19. I think it is the week after for New Hampshire.

What state do you live in & when are the vacations? What do you do with your kids during vacations? Do you go away or have daycare? If you have a "staycation" what budget ideas do you have to do with your kids?

We don't get a Winter break....unless you could the 3 days this week we took off for snow. Our spring break is Easter week...unless we're in school making up days from this week. In NC, we usually start school on Aug 25 ( earliest day NC will allow ) and have Christmas break and Spring break....that's it. Everything else is only 1 or 2 days around a Holiday....well except for Wed - Fri around Thanksgiving. We have to be out of school by June 10.

Western New York February 15-February 19 and April 1 - April 11, and then DD's school is also off from April 19 - April 23 to perform at Disney... I am starting to wonder when they actually have school?

We don't get the week of President's Day off. They are in school. We only get the week before Easter Off and the day after Easter. There is a school just north of us that has off. My friends family is going to Disney that week - I asked her to pack me in her suitcase!

We have Spring Break. here in San Antonio, Tx schools vary on spring break week. I have one in private and one in public. This year they both have the same week off. March 15-19th.
Last year it didnt work out that way so we didnt go away for vacation.

They do have Feb 15th (president's day off) and then April 23rd for Fiesta.

All the counties are different in GA. My DD goes to a city school and we have President's Day and the day after off. I'm not aware of any schools that have a week off in Feb. Most just have a day or two.

What's a Winter Break?

Seriously, I remember being in about 2d grade and reading a story in my English class in which the kids were on Winter Break. We all started asking our teacher about it and she had never heard of it, either. That was in 1968, I think, but I've still never personally encountered a school system that did it, and I've lived in the lower Midwest for 20 years now.

AFAICT, Winter Break is essentially a Northern thing. Schools in the South normally do not do this except perhaps to allow President's Day. Of course, schools in the South usually are not in session past the third week of May, either.

BTW, I also never saw a Spring Break until college.

We are off Feb 15 and 16 fir Mardi Gras. Spring break is the week before Easter

we got tickets to mary poppins for an affordable price. we were in ny last summer and the prices were just too much. we got a hotel in secaucus for 2 nights on hotwire and are planning on doing cheap stuff like ice skating, etc.

We always have the first week of March off, and then just the Friday and Monday of Easter. Long winters mean we really need a break come the end of Feb...as we still have a couple of months of winter to go!

We always go south to find some sunshine....this year we are doing a cruise, and I cannot wait!

Growing up as a west coaster we didn't know what Winter Break was either. For the longest time I just thought that it was anothe rname for Christmas break (and these days it is). We didn't have it when I lived in Michigan or here in Maryland. Just the initial Monday off for President's Day. If you're luck you might get the friday off too making it a 4 day weekend.

We have the same week here in NJ. We are leaving Saturday morning to drive down to Florida. I'm very glad it wasn't this week or we never would have made it. Hopefully next weekend the weather will be a lot better.

Winter break was instituted a few years ago to save on heating costs. Spring break is usually the week before or after Easter.

My girls get Feb. 15-19 off for Mid-Winter Break ~ we get this break every year.
We won't go on any trips, but I'll plan to take them to a movie and lunch on that Monday or Tuesday.
The other days, we'll be playing our new Toy Story Mania game on the Wii ~ it just came yesterday and I'm already addicted, LOL!

Our Spring Break (which was always Easter Vacation when I was growing up ) will be April 2-11. For that break we might take a trip down to IN to see my DSis if I have enough days off in a row.

NYC public schools has

Winter recess - Christmas
Mid winter recess- President's day week
Spring recess- This one is tricky. It may fall during Easter/Passover, depending when the two holidays are. If they are weeks apart, we get three days out for Easter then a week out for Passover.

The week off was orignated back in the late 70's early 80's due to the Opec Crisis, it was a way of saving some fuel in the northern states. I am in NYC and public schools and some private are off President's week but I'm surprised there are a few private schools that only have the weekend off this year but they have a longer Easter/Spring break.

Northeast PA checking in here. We have off for President's Day. Then we have off Thurs-Friday before Easter and Monday after. That's it until Memorial Day in May.

Not true that no southern schools have a week in Feb. In the Atlanta area many counties get a week in Feb. It is part of what we call a balanced calendar. My county is Feb.15-19.

My kids get the week of President's Day off for winter vacation. We are staying home doing some local things like Disney On Ice. Spring vacation week is always the week of the Boston Marathon. We get Good Friday off.

April vacation we are meeting a friend in NJ then spending a day at Great Wolf Lodge. We will also spend a few days in NYC visiting family and playing tourist. Dh is from Manhattan but he isn't coming on this trip so it will be fun finding my own way around.
