Let me start by saying that we booked this trip while onboard the Magic in January of 2007...we suprised DH's parents by making a reservation in their name to join us.
Our cast of characters, Myself, Thea (30), MH, Jim (33), DD, Ariana (9), DS, David (almost 2), FIL, Art and MIL, Vicki.

I am a compulsive planner, so I was MORE than happy to have over a year to research all the possible excursions we could do with the whole family. Then FIL pulled me aside one day in early March and informed me that he and MIL would be celebrating their 35th anniversary while on board the cruise and that he would like to do something really special for her as a surprise...a renewal of their wedding vows--now I was REALLY excited. What could be better than planning a Disney cruise AND a wedding? He gave me full charge of the event, and I went full steam ahead with the planning.
I initially checked into having the ceremony on the ship, but the cost of a vow renewal on board was way out of our budget, so onto researching our ports of call. I searched all over the internet, watched all the destination wedding specials I could find on cable and finally decided on what would end up being the perfect location, The Grand old House on Grand Cayman. I ran the price by FIL, and before he allowed me to tell him about the location, he said "the price is right, but don't tell me anymore so it will be a surprise for me too." When I showed the location to MH, he thought it was great and we decided to get the next package up and pay the difference as an added surprise. I spent the remainder of the time up until the cruise planning the vow renewal and getting to know lots of fellow DisBoarders who would be on the cruise with us.

First--I have to write this in pieces, not only because it is going to be long, but also because I am on duty on the ambulance today and may be called away from my laptop at any time!

Our adventure began on Thursday, Feb. 7th. We all gathered at our home to await the arrival of the limo that would be taking us into Boston, where we would spend the night to allow some extra sleep in the morning before heading to the airport. To DD's delight, a white stretch limo for 10 pulled into our driveway promptly at 3pm. With all our luggage loaded, car seat installed and everyone in their comfy leather seat, we were off and vacation had officially begun!
We arrived at the Westin Copley Place (thanks to a great name your price deal on priceline), checked in and meet MH's brother and his fiance for dinner at the Prudential Center. After lingering over dinner, we headed back to our rooms and turned in for the night.

Friday Feb. 8th

We were all up by 4:30 am, and waiting in the hotel lobby for the shuttle to Logan airport. Our shuttle van, painted like an enormous zebra, arrived right on time and we were on our way to the airport before we knew it.
We grabbed a quick breakfast and waited, as patiently as we could, to board our flight. This was our first time traveling with someone so young, who required a carseat. The Delta flight attendants were a great help in getting us on the flight with the carseat and getting it secured; our fligth was smooth and DS did great on the flight--I think we were more nervous about flying than he was. The whole time he called the plane a "big car". The pilot flew us right over the Daytona Speedway, which was loaded with all the race trailers and fans getting ready for the Daytona 500 the following weekend--a real treat for us as we are HUGE Nascar fans!
We arrived in Orlando earlier than we were scheduled, we made our way to the Hyatt hotel located in the airport. We checked in and went to grab some lunch--this is the second year in a row that we stayed at the airport Hyatt and it is well worth the money!! There is plenty to do there, lots of shopping, a beautiful pool, and loads of places to eat. We anxiously awaited the arrival of a fellow DisBoarder who was also staying there...DD had been chatting on the DisBoards with his DD for a few months, so the girls couldn't wait to meet each other. We spent the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the hotel and shopping, again early to bed that night, but not before a call from the private charter company that we had booked an excursion in Key West with--their boat was unxpectedly help up in dry-dock and they unfortunately had to cancel. We were disappointed but appreciated that they called ahead of time, rather than showing up and not being able to go.

No one had a hard time getting out bed this morning, except maybe DS who hadn't a clue as to what was really going on.
We got downstairs early and were second in line for the bus to the cruise terminal. We enjoyed our time while waiting to board the bus by meeting some of the DisBoarders we met on the Meets board, and even compared tattoos!
All passengers for the Captain Mickey bus were called and we all made our way downstairs to the bus. We took our seats on the bus--at last we were really on our way--even though this was to be the third Disney cruise for MH and I, the second for DD, it was like it was the first time all over again. I don't care what anyone says--you can't ever bore of DCL!!
I should preface this next part by saying that rather than print our photos, I put them into DVD slideshows, so we've had DS watching last year's cruise in preparation of this trip so he would be familiar with everything he was going to take in. He loves this DVD and often asks to see it by asking for the "Boat".
As we made our way to the terminal, we could see the Magic docked over the horizon, as we got closer and the whole ship was in view, DS was absolutely elated and began shouting "Boat! Boat!!" The look of utter and pure joy on his face--quite possibly one of the single best moments of the entire week.
47b8dd22b3127cceb6c741e5616600000026100AcOWLRm5cMmMA

We arrived at the terminal, checked in, got our boarding group assignment, checked the kids in to the kids club and got our pager. Captain Mickey had just arrived in the terminal and the line to see him grew quickly. We got in line so as for DS not to see Mickey--we wanted to surprise him when we got to the front of the line. DS absolutely adores "Kicky and Ninny" and watches Mickey Mouse Clubhouse every day...we were so excited for him to meet Mickey and Minnie in person!! When we got to the front of the line and revealed who we were waiting for, DS again was filled with joy and couldn't wait to get closer to Mickey! Again, another one of the best monents on the trip. It just doesn't get any better than seeing you kids so happy! DS was in awe of Mickey and not at all scared--he was very curious of Mickey's mouth and kept sticking his fingers in to see if Mickey was going to bite. We then headed over to the meeting area where all the "Love Boat" DisBoarders were to meet. The kids all had a great time running around and burned off lots of stored energy. At last it was time to board, we made our way up to gangway, and gave FIL and MIL a pleasant surprise when were all announced on board by Sheika, a favorite castmember from our last cruise. We had totally forgotten to tell them about the special introductions! We made our way up to Topsiders for the buffet lunch, DD was again thrilled to see corndogs on the buffet, and I bee-lined for the chocolate chip cookies--I can't eat enough of those things! After lunch, our cabins were ready so we dropped off our belongings, hung up our door magnets, and made our way up to deck 9 to show the IL's around a bit. Watching DD on the ship, it was like she was just there--she remembered where everything was and happily played "tour guide". We grabbed a seat by the Goofy pool and ordered the first of many great dinks on the cruise! MH is partial to the fruity, I'm partial to the frozen! We saw it was nearing 4, so we began to head back to the cabin to get our PFD's when who should we see coming down the deck but Captain Hook and Mr. Smee. DS immedately reached for Smee, even gave him a high five. He took one look at Hook and very seriously said "no". No tears, no screaming. Just "no". Captain Hook graciously backed away and let DS admire him from a distance.
We all arrived on time for the Lifeboat drill, and then quickly stashed our PFD's in our cabin and headed to deck 9 for the Adventures Away party. This was a new change since our last cruise, we were each given a foil ribbon wand and got on deck just in time for the rain!! It only spattered at first, but became pretty steady for a while...no bother, DD and I stayed on deck and kept dancing away--DH, DS, MIL, and FIL watched from the sides, under cover. The rain didn't last long and just after the infamous Disney Cruise Horn blew, a rainbow appeared port-side. What a perfect way to set sail. At this point MIl became very ill--motion sickness was our first thought since it came on suddenly right as we pulled out of port.
We went to the All Aboard show before dinner and had a great time. Both performers were great, we laughed so hard our bellies hurt!
Dinner that night was at Animator's Palate, we had the 8 pm seating. Our server was Toto, and his assistant, Gavin. While both servers were very nice, we had a little disappointment as we had requested our serving team from last time, who were incredible, however we were not at the same seating. Toto immediately befriended DS, by presenting him with his own box of washable crayons. They actually encouraged DS to color on the tablecloth, and we had an instant artist--Zian our head server called DS "Picasso" for the duration of the cruise after that. We all joked that we'd frame the tablecloths and sell them at the art auction on board.
By the time we were done with dinner, we were all stuffed and decided to call it a night.

can't wait to hear more - how did you get on the first bus from hyatt? Do you have to pre register? What time did you go down to check in? Thank you!:goodvibes

:::joins in::: can't wait to read more --- I am very interested in the vow renewal....

:)

I can actually answer this one as we were right behind them in line comparing tattoos. Registration is listed as starting at 9:00 down in the lobby. We headed down about 8:00 and emtmom and crew were already there.

They got everything set up and started registration early...about 8:30. Nobody really lined up in advance, just relaxed on the comfy couches and chairs. Once they were set up and ready to go people quickly formed a line at the tables.

Who gets which bus is simple...first come first served. The biggest catch was that you had to have ALL of the members of your party there before they'd check you in. Lots of folks were waiting in line and got turned away because some of their group was still upstairs or still eating breakfast.

I have a hard time sleeping on board the ship most nights, not because it's uncomfortable, far from it infact, but because I am worse than the kids when it comes to being overexcited by Disney! I got out of bed and left the group sound asleep. I headed up to Deck 10 with my camera in hand to catch the sunrise. It was so quiet and tranquil, there were only a handful of people outside with me. The weather was nice and balmy, partly cloudy but in a good way--the clouds aided in the stunning orange color of the sky as the sun made its way into the sky. Once the sun was up and I had taken no less than 75 pictures of just the sunrise I headed down to see if the troops had risen. MH and DD were both out for the count DS was stirring. I told MH that I wanted to go and get some coffee and offered to bring him some but he agreed to come with me...we got DS up and dressed, DD begged for more time in bed, so we allowed her to stay behind as her grandparents were right next door. Once outside the stateroom (oops almost forgot to share our location--7037, we will only stay on deck 7 midship!) DS immediately took off toward the stairs...he already knew which way to go to get milk for his bottle. We opted to get breakfast at Topsiders even though we had Mickey's Island Jam breakfast later that morning--I learned last year during the character breakfast that you are so busy taking pictures of everything, you end up never eating breakfast! This year, I was going to be prepared!! DH and DS had a little something to tide them over, while we watched Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Arielvision by the Goofy pool. It was so sunny and warm outside, it was almost hard to go inside! We went back to the room and got Sleeping Beauty out of bed and ready for the character breakfast. We met up with the IL's at Parrot Cay for Mickey's Island Jam breakfast. As it turns, MIL did NOT have motion sickness, as not long after dinner the night before FIL fell ill as well. They skipped breakfast but enjoyed the show during breakfast with us...the kids had a blast, DD was thrilled to hula with Lilo and DS gave Chip a huge hug and kiss and another high five! After breakfast, the IL's headed back to their room to rest before docking in Key West. We headed up on deck to walk around while DD met up with her new BF from the UK to swim...these two girls were practically inseparable the entire cruise, and spent most of their free time pool hopping! They enjoyed many an ice cream, and invented a "new drink" at the drink station. Their concoction? The "Lemon Splash", which consisted of pink lemonade and sprite.
As we pulled into port, I had my camera at the ready--heaven forbid I miss a good photo op! Since our original plans were cancelled, we opted to just see Key West on our own...so no rush to get off the boat. We met up with the IL's, who were feeling worse, but wanted to walk around KW with us. We strolled down Duval Street, Made it about half way down before the IL's felt they couldn't continue. I was somewhat relieved that they decided to return to the boat as I had nothing but Key Lime Pie on my mind, and eating it in front of them would have been just cruel. After we parted ways, we headed straight for The Blonde Giraffe and a piece of pie. MH convinced me we should all split one piece...next time I am getting my own piece because it was so good, it was devoured before I even had a chance to snap a picture of the best piece of KL pie I have ever had. We continued to wander around for a little while before heading back to the ship. Once we were back on board, of course DD wanted to find BF, and head back to the pool. She was able to swim for a bit before it was time to get ready for dinner.
Dinner was at Parrot Cay that night, FIL and MIL were too sick to join us for dinner, which was getting us worried that they would be too sick for the vow renewal on Tuesday!!
At dinner, Toto insisted we all have the chicken wings, and of course we did--I remembered how good they were last year. Apparently I didn't remember the spicey bite they had to them--I almost ate an entire basket of bread!! DS was hooked on the warm banana bread. Again, exhausted, we headed back to the room where I had absolutely NO trouble sleeping that night!

Again this morning I was up early, not quite as early as the day before, but still up before the rest of my group. DS was up not too much later, waking MH and DD up in the process. We headed up to deck 9 to reserve our deck chairs...yes, I know this is not allowed but we've yet to see anyone complain. We met the IL's for breakfast who were starting to feel a bit better, but not quite 100% yet. We were all seated in Topsiders which was packed...which proved my point to everyone in my group that if you aren't up early, it's a long line and a good wait for a table. We could see Cuba off in the east and noticed a rainstorm moving toward us very quickly. I jumped up from breakfast and ran to grab our towels (we bring our own Disney beach towels so we can recognize our seats). I scooped them up and made it underneath the covering on deck 9 just in time--what a downpour!!! It rained for maybe 15-20 minutes, and once it had finished, we reclaimed our seats--at this point no one would have wanted them as it was still windy and damp out...our mission for the morning? relax by the Goofy Pool and watch High School Musical on the big screen...the IL's had never seen it so it was great that they felt well enough to sit through the whole thing...not long after the movie started, the sun came out--there was dancing on deck, numerous trips to get ice cream, more drink inventions (none that I was willing to try). DS met Goofy finally and again, the look on his face was priceless. After spending pretty much all day by the pool, it was time to get ready for the Golden Mickeys, my favorite show on board. We were all dressed to the nines and ready to walk the red carpet. DD was interviewed by Christian on the carpet, just before the show was to begin. After the show, we proceeded to the cocktail party in the atrium. We had formal portraits taken...we actually had LOTS of photos taken by the ship's photographers this time, and we bought a large package of them--I have to say their pictures were sooooo much better than the other two Disney cruises we were on.
It was time for dinner at Lumiere's which, is my favorite restaurant on board. The dining rotation worked out perfectly for formal and semi-formal night, and pirate night too!! Dinner was delicious as usual, and dessert even better. We had a VERY early morning the next day...we had to make sure we were on the first tender onto Grand Cayman for the vow renewal, so we were in bed right away!!
I am going to write a little about the vow renewal now--really about how we kept it a surprise. I knew from the start that I was going to need a good reason to get MIL to buy a white dress for our cruise, and an even better reason as to why she would need to wear it on Grand Cayman. I thought about the location of the ceremony, Smith's Cove, a beach just a short walk from The Grand Old House, who was arranging the ceremony. GOH is an old plantation, so knowing how much MIL loves history and historical living/lifestyle, I came up with this: an old fashion high society tea, where white attire is required. Far fetched? yup. did she believe me? yup. she never questioned it as she isn't into the internet, so I wasn't too worried about her looking anything up on her own. I got her out shopping and managed to get her to buy a dress I had picked out for her without her knowing it. We were all in white, though I purposely made sure I wasn't in all white so as not to take away from her--I told her I needed a splash of color.
Stay tuned for the actual story of the vow renewal!!

It was nice to meet you too!!
We did rebook, we booked for October 10, 2009 although I am not sure if we are going to keep the reservation. We did however, just book a trip to WDW for January 16-23 of 2009, it will be DS's first time!!

It was finally here!! The big day I had been planning for almost a year! We were all up with the sun, dressed and ready to go right on time. We got down to the Buena Vista Theater to get our tickets and spot in line for the first boat tender from the Magic into Georgetown, Grand Cayman. We saw our Disboard friends in line, with all their scuba gear waiting to go as well...MH and I commented to each other how early they must have been to be first in line, and MH was jealous of all the diving they were doing!
We waited for what seemed like an eternity to be called down to the tender--it was actually maybe 15 minutes, long enough to get tired of watching the Wiggles on the movie theater screen. We made our way outside to the tender and got our first look at Grand Cayman--how stunning it was!! The water was the most beautiful shade of blue, and surrounding the Magic were 6 other cruise ships...quite the sight! As we approached the dock at shore, we had a little delay in getting a spot, which was starting to make me nervous about getting to Smith's Cove...I had no idea how long it would really take to get there from the terminal, I had been told about ten minutes, but this was first thing in the morning, and it looked like there was, what I thought, rush hour traffic. We were greeted by numeroud tour companies offering deals to every beach on this island except the one we were going to...one of the gentleman even went so far as to tell me that I didn't really want to go to Smith's Cove because "there's nothing there but some rocks". Hoping that MIL wouldn't catch on that we were headed to a tiny beach with just one bathroom, I ushered everyone down the street to the taxi dispatch. Being involved with the fire department, I knew that a taxi stand and a taxi dispatch were two separate things, so I asked one of the dispatchers where we could catch a taxi for 6--she was so kind; she went over to one of the drivers and had him take us directly from the dispatch. We gave him our destination and within 8 minutes we were at the beach. Early. Really early. We took advantage of the time we had and wandered around the beach. Smith's Cove was absolutely stunning--a beach within limestone rocks, the contrast between the rock and the water and the cream colored sand was goregous. I knew right away my research had been right on the money and that this was just the right spot for an intimate vow renewal. At this point, MIL still had no idea anything was going on...I had told her that we'd be stopping at this beach for a bit first, then someone from the Grand Old House would be walking us over to the "tea party", that was good enough for her and she continued walking around the beach with the kids, DH, and FIL. Not long after our arrival, maybe 15 minutes, Daniella from the Grand Old House arrived with chairs, and a table. Here's where it gets really crafty. MIL knew that I had met someone on the Disboards who was getting married on Grand Cayman--shortly after our tea party and that it was at the same location. MIL also knew that MH and I were the witnesses for this wedding. So when I went over to greet Daniella and let her know that we were all here and ready to go and that MIL still had no idea what was going on, I went back and told MIL that I was letting the coordinator know that the witnesses for the wedding were here already and that I was double checking the time of that wedding. MIL just assumed then, that all the chairs and table and other items being set up were for the wedding to follow. When the photographer arrived, MIL assumed again, it was for the wedding. While she was busy watching DS, who had become absuloutely obsessed with a coconut, I slipped away to the photographer (who was talking with the coordinator) to tell him of the surprise, and to please make sure he got a good picture of her face when the true plans for the day had been revealed. Jim, the photographer, was so excited to learn of the surprise himself, he had never done a surprise wedding of any type! All we were waiting for now was the minister, who was stuck in traffic elsewhere on the island but would be there soon...while we awaited his arrival, small tour groups came in and out taking some pictures of the beach while some locals came and set up chairs for sunbathing during the day. Some small boats stopped by to snorkel for a little bit and moved on. MIL noticed Jim taking photos from a distance and whispered "Should we tell him we aren't with that wedding?" but then she said he'd figure that out when we left for the tea party. She really had no clue at all. Finally the minister arrived and we were just about to get things going. I waved FIL and MIL over to near where the chairs were. FIL was getting ready to re-propose to MIL when all of a sudden, a tourist came up to us and said "Did you all organize this wedding yourself?" My jaw dropped and my face was white as the sand...all this time and some stranger drops the bomb? No one said anything, I was searching for the right response, and FIL saved it--he very simply said "My wife and I are celebrating our 35th anniversary and I brought her here today to renew our wedding vows." "Really??" asked MIL with a huge smile and a look of shock on her face!
I looked at her and just yelled "Surprise!!" She gave me a huge hug and started asking how long this had been planned, who knew, etc. She then asked if DD knew, and we told her proudly, yes, she's known from the start and had kept this secret all along. So now, with the real plan out in the open, it was time to get things going--FIL was given his boutiniere and MIL her bouquet which was made of tropical flowers--it was beautiful. Canon in D was played and FIL walked MIL down the aisle. The sea and rocks were a stunning backdrop to the ceremony. The minister, was wonderful and gave a beautiful ceremony. FIL surprised MIL yet again with a new ring...I sat and watched with tears of joy in my eyes--I'll never deny that I'm a sap for happy endings. DS was growing impatient, and decided he wanted nothing more than to lay in the sand, so he did. Right at MIL's feet during the ceremony. We all agreed to let him be as he was happy...happy pouring sand all over MIL's feet. At the end of the ceremony, we all signed the certificate, and the minister made us promise to come back in 35 years so the IL's could renew their vows again. We celebrated with champagne, which was quite good--DD asked for a small taste so she could join in the toasts, and she ended up loving it!! DS didn't love that we wouldn't allow him a glass. Following the toasts, we took more pictures and then had cake. Quite possibly one of the best cakes I've ever had. So good we ate the ENTIRE thing!! After all, it was our breakfast!! I am a firm believer in cake for breakfast every now and then. Everything was really perfect...a great big thank you to the staff at the Grand Old House who had everything ready to go the way I had requested. When we had finished every last crumb of cake and every last drop of bubbly, we all walked over to The Grand Old House. The House was as beautiful as the pictures I had seen online, prettier actually. The view from the wedding pavillion is spectacular. We went to the bar to have a cold drink, MH and FIL had a celebratory glass of Cognac, which shocked them at 22 Cayman dollars a glass! It was a special occasion though! The rest of us had a soda--it was getting very warm out--the sun was shining bright! DS was now sound asleep in his stroller, the waitstaff, all in love with him, insisted we let him stay inside in the cool air. MIL and FIL bid us good bye as they headed back to the ship for the Rasul FIL had booked as a "honeymoon" surprise for MIL. We anxiously awaited the arrival of our new friend Judy, the bride of the wedding we were to witness. Her handsome groom Brian and her son Joe were already there, having some pictures taken. We were told that Judy and her daughter would be arriving any minute so we headed outside to our spots for the ceremony.
I won't go into detail about that, Judy can tell you herself, but from our view, it was a wonderful wedding and we were truly happy and honored to be a part of it. The minister, the same who had conducted the ceremony for the IL's, told us that we were now bound to Judy and Brian and that it was our job to check up on them--a duty we'll happily obey! We stayed for lunch at the Grand Old House with Judy, Brian, and family, as well as their photographer Rebecca...who was also as nice as can be. We had a wonderful time and incredible food--we had eaten more than our fill yet again, but still managed room for more cake. Forget, jello, there's always room for cake.
After an indulgent lunch, Ariana returned to the beach with the bride and groom while we headed back to the ship. We stopped off for a couple of souveniers and then back onto the tender to the boat. I managed to forget to cover myself with sunscreen in the morning when I was pretty much bathing everyone else in it, so I was pleasantly pink and luckily not red. MH and DS passed out cold on the bed.

I was told this was a result of a bottle of champagne at the vow renewal, a glass of cognac, champagne at the wedding, and two glasses of wine at lunch...all before 2 pm! As for DS, well there are plenty of pictures that make me question just what Disney has in their milk for example:

Back to my report...
We were all exhausted, and stuffed, but we all made it to dinner that night somehow--back at Animator's Palate. After dinner we went to Who Wants to be a Mousketeer and had a great time...DD won a special pin at the end of the game since they ran out of time for contestants. We retired back to the room soon after that, as again we had another busy day ahead!
As soon as I have it converted to an AVI, I will be posting the photo dvd I made of the vow renwal!

Great trip report - can't wait to hear more. We will be cruising in June with our 22 month old so I'm always looking for other's experience with toddlers.

Did your DS sleep in a pack-n-play?

Oh Thea ! thank you so much for sharing !!!!! BEAUTIFUL photos !! ...just stunning ! :goodvibes ...and doesn't your MIL look so young !!(that's not saying FL looks old BTW).

Looks like your renewal was every bit as fantastic as our wedding. Can't wait to show Brian and the kids tonight.:lovestruc

Did your DS sleep in a pack-n-play?

We were in a category 11 stateroom, which we always get, so we opted not to use the pack n play--DS slept in the fold out bed, with a padded rail. We were a bit concerned as he's never slept out of a crib, but he did fine. It saved us loads of space in the stateroom.
