I have an idea of my dates, and where I want to stay (of course I'll change my mind 20 times).

Should I book now room only by calling or wait till packages are released (June right?) Is there an advantage to doing it one way over another?

You will pay a deposit equal to the first night at the highest possible rack rate of 2017. So that can be a sticker shock, as the quote will be the whole stay at that rate.

I don't book until I have a full vacation price that I am willing to pay.

If you know you want a package, it's probably best to wait until the 2018 rates are released. If you book RO now and change to a package later, the RO will have to be cancelled/refunded and a package booked, requiring a new deposit of $200. Since RO and packages are different reservation systems, money paid toward one cannot be applied to the other. The 2018 rates should be out sometime next summer. One year they were out as early as mid June, but it's usually closer to the July/August time frame.

I would wait as well, you've got plenty of time and changing later would be much more of a hassle
