Just got off the phone with my SIL...and she said that your ship turned around soon after leaving and was met by a coast guard ship......

she had heard two different stores....Wondering if anybody else heard what had happened....

1) Little girl had breathing problems and needed medical attention
2) Little girl dove into the Mickey pool and broke her back...

She said both sounded reasonable...but the staff was extrememly closed mouth that anything had happend....The breathing problem was told to them by their server.....

She also said that some poor gentlemen broke out with the chicken pox within hours of leaving....

I was on that cruise, Just got home tonight! I was on the way to guest services when a cabin steward joked with us that we were on our way back to Port Canaveral. At first I thought he was just joking, so I thought I would ask at guest services. They told me that a guest had had heart failure or a heart attack (I don't remember the exact terms used) soon after we left, and we were returning to take him to the hospital. It only put us into St. Maarten about an hour behind.

It wasn't a hush hush thing. Guest services had no problem telling me what happened when I asked.

that also sounds like a reasonable answer....

Hope whom ever was injured is doing OK...

It seems to be SOP to not overly publicize the nature of such an incident.

On our cruise we detoured to get a family off the ship for emergency medical treatment. We pulled near the island (wish I could remember the name) and they lowered the family in one of the lifeboats. It went over and was met at the shore, the boat came back and we were on our way.

Very little was saying while it was ongoing. Afterwards the Capt made an announcement that we had been detoured and would be only a few minutes late arriving at our next port.

If he had not announced it, I bet 90% of the guests would not have known it occurred.

From what we were told on RCCL, it's not an uncommon for that sort of thing to occur. When we were sailing on Voyager of the Seas, we were waiting in line to have our photo taken on formal night and a gentleman in front of us suddenly passed out. He only appeared to be in his late 20s and didn't look sickly at all. I had noticed an emergency phone near the elevators so I ran to call for aid. He was taken away, and I don't know what happened...hopefully he was okay. But when I was chatting with a crew member about it, he said that it's not uncommon to even have a fatality, particularly on routes such as Alaska where passengers tend to be older. Pretty creepy thought, but I guess it makes sense.
One Disney, out of 29 cruises we've only been diverted once due to a medical emergency (it was a crew member, not a passenger). It happen on our Eastern cruise, and we heard later that they received medical attention in time and were fine.

I've actually been diverted twice on DCL due to medical emergencies. It really is not uncommon at all.

We were delayed in CC for a medical emergency back on the 7/7/01 cruise. We wound up being very late into Port Canaveral and many people missed their early flights. We did not get clearance to disembark until almost 11:00 am. We had to just sit in the hallways off the atrium because we still had to be out of our rooms.

As a former flight attendent I used to fly the long hauls on 747's which hold quite a few people. Not as many as on a cruise ship. We also have the pressurisation(sp) to deal with. I would say 50% of the time we had some type of medical emergency and were calling for an MD on board. I pretty much believe that when you get that many people in one place for 7 days, it would be pretty amazing that all remain completley healthy. I think its all in the numbers.:smooth:

We saw someone airlifted from C on our cruise. (I'll have the photo's of it up on my site sometime in teh next few days) We heard it was a crew member., but don't know anything else. The man DID walk from the wheelchair into the helicopter on ihs own, he had an IV attached.

Also the day we boarded the Magic came into port a bit late as Carnival had a medical emergency onboard and asked to dock first, of course DCL obliged. We still were able to board starting at around 12:30, although we left port about half an hour later than normal.

Wow-
I was on that cruise and didn't notice a thing except a coast guard escort at sailaway...I'm interested to hear what other people heard. I doubt the pool story as it was a little cool to swim the first night. I thought the coast guard was for extra security....(clueless) I didn't know we went back!

Anyone else know more...
