As our tastes have changed in hotels through the years, so has our desire to experience new and better. We always stayed at 3* hotels, and a few years back we graduated to 4* hotels. Well, here in NC we have one 5* hotel. It is south of Chapel Hill in the middle of a farm- The Fearrington House. In the summer they are a little slow, and have a through the week special of stay one night, the next night is free. Considering their rates start at $220 for a standard room and go up to about $400, this is a great deal.

Well, we did it. We stayed at The Fearrington House a few weeks back and have raised the bar so high, we may never be happy anywhere else (kidding-sort of). We checked in and were told immediately that we were upgraded to a deluxe room for no extra charge. Yum, this is going to be a great few days!

The hotel is more like several small houses. Our room was on the second floor. It was huge. Beautiful window treatments (windows on two entire walls overlooking the pastures and gardens), bedspreads, furniture. Original artwork on the walls. 2 ceiling fans in the bedroom. Automatic light in the closet (with 2 robes of course!). Marble shower and floors. Heated towel rack. China accessories in the bathroom (nightlight, soap holder- that type of thing). Real floral arrangement in bedroom and bath. Live plant in bath. Bowl of apples, bottled water. At night they turn your bed down and on either side of the bed they leave linen towel with slippers (and fill the ice bucket, and of course those nice chocolates on the pillows).

The staff was great. Everyone we met was from somewhere other than the US. Very well traveled. The room included a gourmet breakfast each morning and afternoon tea (with great sandwiches and goodies) each day. The breakfast was served in their 5* dinning room which was so beautiful (a collection of about 10 rooms each beautifully decorated).

Eye candy everywhere you looked. I can't wait till next year to return!

Wow! This place sounds incredible! We have relatives in North Carolina, so I printed out your report so I can remember to make ressies there the next time we go visit. Thanks for sharing.

WOW! I looked them up after reading your description and this place looks great!! Our anniversary is in May but it is worth waiting a few months to celebrate and get the great special. I think I know where we are going next July. Thanks so much for sharing.

I wish our anniversary were in July or Aug! They even asked prior to our arrival if we were celebrating anything for our stay.

Here is their website if anyone is interested:

PS Be warned, it will make any other hotel pale in comparrison!

I remember this lovely place well from my days of living in Durham. Are the sheep still there?

This is exactly the kind of place I would love to see added to the Concierge Collection.

reneesam, do you mean the cows? The Belted Galloways- you know the oreo cookie cow. Black at front and black in the back and a wide white 'belt'. Yes, they sure are there. The belties are their mascots.

Yes, I meant cows lol!

(Cows, sheep, cobwebs all muddled together in the dusty storage vaults of less than crucial facts :jester:)

We had an anniversary dinner there many years ago when we lived in Cary. All I can say is WOW!
