did you ever read something in a book and it stuck with you?

this is one of my favorite quotes:

"'Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence were, all, my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!'"

and another:

The quality of mercy is not strained; It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed- It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes.

"Hey, Boo."

To Kill A Mockingbird. Makes me cry everytime I read it.

War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend...

Faramir, in _The Lord of the Rings_

I was really sorry they left this out of the movie...

"Humans think they are smarter than dolphins because we build cars and buildings and start wars etc...and all that dolphins do is swim in the water, eat fish and play around. Dolphins believe that they are smarter for exactly the same reasons."

Douglas Adams - The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy Series (not sure which book)

I have a few I like

Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.
Mark Twain

Humor is the great thing, the saving thing. The minute it crops up, all our irritation and resentments slip away, and a sunny spirit takes their place
Mark Twain

That man uses facts like a drunk uses a lightpost, for support not illumination
not sure who said that one

Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.
Oscar Wilde

Two of my favorite works: A Christmas Carol & The Merchant of Venice

Sirius, I was wondering if someone would recognize those quotes!

I teach both of those in my British Literature classes.

oh, wow. British lit...

I fell in love with Shakespeare in high school. I actually had a teacher who taught Shakespeare as (gasp! can you believe it?) THEATER.
