So is there anyone who can give me their experience of going to Universal Orlando in May and if you think fastpasses aren't worth the money during that time?

It depends on when you're going in May. If you go early in the month, it's probably not worth it but around Memorial Day weekend you would be wise to purchase. But you should always wait until you are at the parks before purchasing. Express Plus passes are non-refundable and date specific.
