Fastpass question?

This is my first trip to Disneyland and we usually go to WDW a couple times a year so I feel like I know the fastpass system there, but need some help with Disneyland fastpass. How many can you have at one time? I read that people get FP's in the morning for DL and then hop to DCA and return in the evening to use those earlier fastpasses. Do the CM's allow you to return after the hour posted on your FP?
Any information will be so appreciated. Thank you.

You can get another FP either when your ride window begins, or two hours after you got the FP, so if you get a FP for Splash at 8:00 AM to come back at 9:00 AM, you can get a new FP for another ride at 9:00 AM. If your window was to return after 11:00 AM (three hours later), you could pick up another FP at 10:00 AM (two hours after getting that pass). You can continue collecting as many FP as possible this way.

You can use the FP ANY time after that initial time (so it doesn't have to be within the window they provide), as long as it is the same day. Also, DL and DCA are not connected, so you can go to DCA and get a FP for a ride there before your window is up in DL, if that makes sense.

For future reference, the same concept about returning after the first time listed on the ticket, not necessarily within the hour can be applied at WDW too!

Yes

you can get a FP and when the return window is up, get another FP. Hold onto both until later in the evening and use at your leasier.
This works at both DL and DCA, so technically you could hold many many FP in your hand at one time

Because DL is so compact.....& because DCA is steps away.....& because early AM is much less crowded at DLR than at WDW........& because one can use FPs that are collected in the morning much later in the day (well past the "use by" time window).....one can really max out on FP usage at DLR (way more than at WDW).

Get a DLR ride map out & Read Hydroguy's links above. Read the "Getting the most out of FP during High Season" several times.

Everyone has a great time at Walt's Park....but knowing & using FP effectively makes it even better.

Thank you everyone for the prompt replies. I think I understand DL's system now. I love the fact that you can return later that evening with fastpasses gathered from the morning. We are so anxious for our trip to Disneyland and I want to make the most of our 3 days there.

Also, ON the FP it will tell you when you can collect your next FP for that park. The only exception to the 2 hour rule is if it is the same ride.

Example: You collect a Space Mt FP at 11 am for a 2-3 pm return time. You can collect a FP for any other ride at 1 pm (2 hours) but can't get another Space FP until 2 pm when your current FP window opens.
