Fastpass Distribution Machine Process

With the updated Digital FP using the barcode scanner to confirm your FP return, I was all set to order lanyards with ID holders for our group of 9 to use on our upcoming trip so everyone could easily keep up with his/her ticket and have it ready at a moment's notice. However, I am stretching my memory as to the process at the FP Distribution machines. (It's been 4+ years since our last visit and I have slept and been to WDW with FP+ since then!) Am I correct that you must insert the ticket into the machine? So the paper ticket will need to be removed from the lanyard case each time? I can see this being a time-suck, especially with 4 kids involved and those dang plastic cases being super sticky.
Can someone please confirm this process? I probably need to rethink my plan...

Yes, as of a few weeks ago you still need to physically insert your ticket into the machine to get your fast pass. I don't think they have announced the time frame for digital fast passes yet, so you still have to put your ticket in for now. Getting closer though...

The digital/wifi part of MP is rumored to go live next week, so your wait may be pretty short.
