Does anyone know definitely how admission tickets interact with the Fastpass system?

Here's my question: if members of our party are sleeping late, can we borrow their tickets and use them to get fastpasses? Or do the tickets actually have to pass through the turnstile in order to activate them in the fastpass machines?

Hope that's clear -- if it's not, please let me know and I'll try to clarify. Thanks...

If the ticket was not used to gain access to the park, then you cannot use it to get a FP. In other words, it's activated for that day when you use it to go through the turnstile.

At least that's the way it works at Disneyland. It's probably the same at WDW.

That is correct. A ticket must be scanned at the gate or it is not valid to get a FastPass.

This is definitely true. A couple years ago our youngest son's AP was not scanning properly and the gate CM just waved him in. That was great until we tried to get a fast pass with his ticket . . . We ended up going to guest services and getting him a replacement pass.
