Hi we are from the uk and we are going to DL for the first time in March. We go to WDWall the time and am used to their FASTPASS. Ca anyone explains n DL fast pass and is it worth it to pay for MaxPass and how does that work. Thank you

waves from Dublin. I go to Disneyland California every year and Im planning my next trip for June 2019 :)

The first thing you need to know is that there are 2 ways to access the Fastpass system in Disneyland. However unlike Walt Disneyworld, all Fastpasses in Disneyland can only be obtained on the day, once you have entered the park. You can not book any Fastpass in advance.

The Disneyland Fatspass rules are
You can only hold 1 Fastpass at a time. Your next Fastpass becomes available 90 minutes after you obtained your current Fastpass OR when you use your current Fastpass, whichever happens first.

For example,
Fastpass for Space Mountain obtained at 10 with a return time of 5pm
You can obtain your next Fastpass at 12pm

OR

Fastpass for Space Mountain obtained at 10 with a return time of 11am
You can obtain your next Fastpass as soon as you have scanned into the Space Mountain Return Scanner

1. The traditional FREE paper Fastpass. This is where you insert your paper park ticket into the Fastpass kiosk located next to the ride. You will get a paper receipt and the Fastpass will be loaded onto your paper ticket.
To use this Fastpass you scan your paper ticket at the Fastpass Return scanner.

2. MAXPASS. This is a paid for Fastpass service using the Disneyland AP on your phone. For 2019 the cost is $15 per person per day.
You need data on your phone to use this system. Disneyland does not have park wide Wifi , only limited hotspots which vary in the strength of signal. I have tried connecting to the Wifi at various locations and give up on it.

You buy Maxpass through the Disneyland AP once you have entered the park. You can then use the AP to obtain Fastpasses or to cancel Fastpasses. To use this Fastpass you scan your phone at the Fastpass Return scanner.

The only other difference between paper Fastpass and Maxpass is that you can obtain your next Fastpass after 90 minutes with Maxpass, compared with 2 hours with the paper Fastpass

When I am in America I have data roaming turned off and rely on free Wifi. I was in Disneyland in June 2018 and I only used the free paper Fastpasses. I had no issues and was even able to stack them for the evening time. The paper receipts tell you when you are eligible for a new Fastpass, so I just kept track of time.

Thank you so much for your reply and the heads up over the WiFi. We had assumed WiFi would be like WDW.

Wifi is terrible. When it is working properly, it slows down the app (at least for me it does). So I just keep mine turned off.

you are welcome :) all the Americans love Maxpass and everyone will advise you to get BUT as an international visitor you really wont be able to use it on the free Wifi.

There are 2 ways to use data in America if you really do want to use Maxpass

1. Get an American SIM card. However you need to make sure your phone is unlocked and is compatible with the American phone networks.

2. Have a UK 3 bill pay sim card / phone. 3UK have a free data roaming plan for America, similar to what we have when we travel to European countries. I have a friend from Scotland who has a 3UK bill pay phone and she uses data in America free of charge. Unfortunately 3 Ireland does not have this facility so I am stuck with no data and relying on free Wifi in America.

Dont get too hung up on the advice from Americans about Maxpass. Its an advantage but NOT a necessity. You will still be able get Fastpasses without Maxpass, you will still be able to stack them in the evening if you are clever and watch the return times. You just need to be a bit more organised thats all :)
