Fast food: What happened to the "small" sizes?

Kimberly,

Get the kids meal. Trust me! It's the closest thing to the old 'small' meals.

What's sad is that I order those kid meals and I'll get a young kid at the window asking where the kid is!

It's now a kid's meal. Which is what people should order when they go to fast food restaurants. That or a salad with little or no dressing.

The sizes all changed in the early 90's. I don't remember exactly what year it was ...could have even been '88 or '89. I was a manager at Wendy's back then when all those changes went into place. I THINK McD's was the first to change and then Wendy's when they added the Value Menu and the Biggie drinks and fries.

The rare times I go to Wendy's and I want a Frosty I get the Junior size which is what would come with the kids meal. It is 6 ounces and is plenty.

I agree! I tend to forget they changed the sizes even though I REMEMBER when they did it. It was all so confusing because you never quite sure what size you were going to get. There are still some here, that I'm never quite sure since we don't go to them that often, what their sizes are either.

I was really thirsty not too far back so decided to get a Medium drink (here we have "regular", Med & large (which I think is "medium, large & super size")). I was going through the drive-through so couldn't see the actual sizes, I about fell over when I was handed my drink. The thing was HUGE! I remember just thinking "umm..OK, I know I was really thirsty but not THAT thirsty". My brain must have reverted back to high school drink sizes. I can't remember which fast food place this was.

My DH always just orders kid's meals since he doesn't care for a lot (at least at fast food places! Hee Hee. Big steaks are a different matter.)

I know if we are eating in, we always just order the smallest size & do the refills if we want more.

McDonald's actually started upsizing their menu in the 70's. When they first opened, there was one size of fries. In the 70's, they made that a small and added a large. Then they made the large a medium and added a new large. Then they made all of those larger and eventually added the supersize. Burgers got larger too. So if you go in today and order a regular burger and a small fries, you are probably getting 2-3 times the calories you would have gotten with the "same" order 40 years ago. Of course, the drinks have also gotten much larger. And we wonder why people are getting heavier and heavier. Even if you try to be good and order small everything, the deck is stacked against you.

2. Not everything is as good the second time around. I don't care how you reheat your leftovers, they just aren't as good as when they were fresh. Especially fish and vegetables. Also, sauces tend to dry up. I'll certainly use the leftovers so as not to waste them, but they are rarely anywhere near as good as the original meal.

This is my problem a lot of times too . I was in NJ this weekend visiting my parents so we had to hit Perkins for some double bacon eggs benedict It comes with two egg bacon englsih muffin thingss and hash browns and a muffin but I can only eat one egg combo and about a 1/3 of the hash browns I didnt even bother taking the leftovers with me because who wants to eat a reheated egg

I cant even think of one resturant meal where I can eat the whole thing in one sitting even salads are huge.

I hate that the sizes are all screwy now. No more small. The small is really a medium and the medium is really a large or bigger. I hate when I go some place and drive thru, ask for a medium, and then end up with a cup bigger than my head. How in the heck am I supposed to get that to fit into my cup holder. And the smalls sometimes aren't even on the menu. Only mediums, large and oh my god size.

And dont even get me started on Starbucks. What the heck, no small? Tall is the small. And what the heck is grande and venti? Make it easy on me people.

When I eat fast food, I tend to order kids meals, as well. A small cheeseburger and a few fries is plenty for me!!

I stopped at Wendy's after work on Friday and got a medium diet coke. I was shocked when they handed me this huge cup! It barely fit into the cup holder in my car. I noticed they charged $1.39, I think it used to be $1.09. So I guess I have to ask for small now.

I was referring to the drink sizes changing and the small we are used to being eliminated.
