Farm Fresh Eggs- weirded out!!

I ate them!
I made scrambled eggs with cheese and ketchup and was able to eat about half the meal. The taste really is good. Better than the store eggs for sure, but it was never the taste I was worried about.

I know that generally speaking, we as a society have gotten so far from our heritage in many ways and farming in one of them. Gardening is perfectly fine, but we have grown up feeling different about animals than our great great grandmothers. At our house if a chicken got its neck wrung, we'd bury it and have a ceremony!

I think I'll be able to bake with these eggs without any problem. And eat a little every once in a while..... baby steps, you know!

teacups, I'm sorry I sound so mean - I just really, really don't understand this. If you said the idea of eating an egg made you sick because they came out of a chicken, then I could see it. But you don't seem to have any problem eating an egg - just eating one from a real chicken that is on your property. And from what I know of fresh eggs vs. grocery store eggs, the fresh ones are so much better!! To me, it would be like saying you won't eat blueberries off the bush in your backyard that you have grown organically because the idea of eating it makes you sick but you'll eat the container from the grocery store that has had pesticides sprayed on it. It just doesn't make logical sense.

But I see now that this might be a real phobia instead of just a "Look how silly I am" and that is a different story. Since I asked you in my first post if you were really serious and you didn't anwer, I assumed you were stretching the truth. If not, then my tone was too harsh and I'm sorry.

It's not the end of the world if you never eat an egg.

I have never had a farm fresh egg however I would eat it if it was presented to me. I always try new things.

Might have to track some down now. I know they are around here.

I actually am going to buy this book to read. He is an enviromentalist and believes in growing your own food.

Woo hoo!! Farm girl (born and raised) here and it's the reason I'm a vegetarian. I DO know where food comes from and never, ever came to agree with it.

However, I think it's wonderful when people raise chickens for eggs. : If they are well-taken care of, they are leading the best possible life a chicken can have.

And factory farming for eggs is absolutely horrifying.

Congrats on your fresh eggs! You're making me hungry!

I'm the same way. DH's best friend has a farm, and I've had a tough time over the years with the beef, pork and eggs we've gotten from there. Those things should come from a store, not an animal.

When we moved from NJ, where we only got white eggs, to MA, where the eggs were mostly brown eggs, when I was 15, I was mortified. I had a terrible time bringing myself to eat them. Now 36 years later, given a choice, I always choose brown. "Brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh." (The TV commercial jingle. )

My mom's aunt has a friend who pays her with eggs (she isn't monetarily well off)...about six dozen over a week. My gramma (great-aunt), um, farms them out to the rest of us. I still haven't had one as an egg, but my mom and DS made brownies with them.

When I was a kid, I "rescued" an egg from the fridge to hatch. I buried it in warm clothes, and about a week later, I went to check on it. I picked it up and tapped on it...and it exploded rotten egg guts all over my room. Just thought I'd share...

I did something similar with a Robin's egg when I was a kid. I was SO surprised when it smelled so awful!! I had found it on the ground and I'm sure that, at least for a moment, I considered sitting on it!!

It wasn't too bad, clean up-wise. I clearly remember egg all over my Mario Lopez and Mark-Paul Goselaar posters. It smelled for about a day (this was before Febreeze), but I left my windows open, so that helped.

What she did get mad about was the homemade pond we tried to make in the backyard...

See, I totally disagree with the belief that people think too much about where their food comes from. I don't think they think ENOUGH about it. This is one of the huge problems brought about by the almost total loss of family farms in our country. With the giant agri-businesses producing our food, nobody even has to think about where their next meal is coming from. This is what I truly find scary.

Oh, I have read Ted Nugent's book and liked it even though I completely disagree with his political views. Some parts of it were hilarious.

Yay for you! It would have been so easy to just have been like, "All you DISers are crazy; I don't hafta eat 'em if I don't wanna!" and had that be the end of it, but you gave 'em a try!

I have been keeping an eye on this thread cuz DH and I just bought a house with a little bit of land (by SoFla standards) and we are seriously considering some chickens for eggs.

I just wanted to say to teacups, the OP, I really liked your demeanor on this thread. Some posters had a bit of a harsh tone towards you, but you kept your sense of humor.
