Fantasmic first week in December

Is it really neccessary to get one of the meal packages for Fantasmic at this time of year? I know you can't use the MYW meal plan credits and my son is 10 years old and will not eat $23 or more worth of food. We will be paying for this meal out of pocket. Also what time does Fantasmic show at this time of year?

I can't remember what time it started but I want to say about 7ish?? You won't need to do the meal but I still would get there at least 30-45 minutes prior. We go during the first week of December, which is usually the slowest time and when the show was about to start the place was completely full.
