so I am thinking instead of using a big messanger bag of getting the very touristy fanny pack. i have looked at some and many seem impractical (heavy, leather, black) for a summer trip. I don't want to wear something that will make me super hot and all i need is room for cell room keys wallet and sunscreen. everything else will either be worn or if it is a package sent to the hotel.

what i want:

light weight:faint:
light colored :sunny:
nylon/waterproof --not like super water proof but enough it gets splased to not soak through. :umbrella:

what do you think? do you know of any places that sell packs like this? would i be better just carrying the messanger bag and be able to have water and umbrellas with us all the time?

thanks in advance!

My advice: Go with the uncool fanny pack. It's much easier on your body. I've done theme parks with a fanny pack before. But when I went to Disneyland Paris, I used my lightweight, micro fiber messenger bag that I had purchased for the trip. What a pain: First, it became a literal pain in my shoulder. (I've never felt pain in my hips from a fanny pack.) Every time I sat down in a ride, I had to figure out what to do with the messenger bag. With a fannypack, you just sit down! I was silly to think I had to be chi-chi at DLP. Believe me, no one looks chic at a theme park, even if it is just outside of Paris. So for WDW, go with the comfort of a fanny pack.

Hi, Maxx NY makes a "belt bag" aka. more stylish fanny pack. They sell it at qvc.com for around 25.00 - comes it great colors! I bought the navy two years ago (to match denim) It is great!!!!! (item#a96175)

We will be doing the FannyPacks!!!

I just cannot stand anything putting weight around my neck/shoulders...

I am going to pick up a couple for us at our nearby Totes outlet... Only $5:00!!! These are really comfortable, not just a thin strappy-belt... And, they are really good sized too! I can actually wear it up around to my side (don't have to worry every time I move or sit down...) and I can almost use it as an arm-rest!!!

I am getting basic-black... I wear a lot of either black or white anyhow. I figure it can go anywhere/anytime!

Fanny packs may not be cool, but the reason everyone has them on is because they work! Believe me, no one at WDE goes around making fun of other peoples fanny packs mainly because they've got one on themselves!
I see people struggling with backpacks, and shake my head.

Going to Disney is not a fashion statement right? I guess it's just our own self consciousness about wearing fanny packs... I have them too! I dont want to have pictures taken of me and me wearing a fanny pack.

marriedmary... i aggree i don't want to "look" bad in a photo. I just have to weigh the fact that if we do us a fanny pack we are lugging around a camara bag and won't have unbrellas, but if we have the book bag we are lugging it around and it is heavy and hard to "wear" on rides... i read all the "reccomended" things to bring to the parks and it's lik having your own portable medicine chest/kitchen/bathroom/and closet in one.

I guess I never though about how much we'd have to carry :)

DH tells me the other day he plans to bring a backpack to the parks... We've been to plenty of amusement parks in the past and he has never wanted to bring a backpack except to water parks (to carry change of clothes, towels, etc). So why he wants to carry one now is beyond me.

I'm with you though - I hate lugging stuff around... especially stuff like snacks/water because after you eat them the backpack is empty and you are carrying it for nothing. Or if you carry ponchos and it never rains .. well ponchos are another non-fashionable item aren't they ;)

I've seen some decent inexpensive ones at Walmart. They have regular sized ones and some, um... larger ones for the "Pooh" sized folks.

Although you may have changed your mind already about the fannypack, here is one that I have and I love:

http://www.arcteryx.com/product.aspx?prod=806955110500

It's the Urban Fanny Pack by Arc'teryx. It is small, simple, stylish, and extremely well made (nylon or nylon-like material, waterproof front lining, high stitch count for strong seams, small inner pocket for keys, large/easy to grab zipper). Comes in several colors.

It says it's "men's," but I'm a girl and it fits me great. You can find it for about $20... may seem like a lot but I've had mine for 7 years and have worn it in extreme conditions, and it still looks like new!

I got my fanny pack through jansport.com. I got it two years ago for my disney trip and it came in really handy. It is just the right size to hold sunscreen, hand wipes, etc. It even has pockets for water bottles. It ended up keeping my camera dry on all of the water rides and it is just the right size that it fits in some of the center storage units on the rides.

I had the same concerns you did, I needed a non-fanny pack fanny pack. I found it in a lumbar pack, which is a snazzy way of saying "fanny pack" ;)

Mine carries a lot fo stuff in a small space. Two Brita bottles, digital camera, sunglass cleaning kit, money/ID, DH's sunglass case, hand sanitizer, sunblock, chapstick, mini-tripod... kinda like Mary Poppins and her carpet bag! :rotfl:

They make smaller ones similar to mine. Check out REI.com or ems.com (eastern mountain sports.)

I thought I had a better pic of it, but you can kinda see it here. Whenever I needed it I just turned in 'round! It didn't chafe, it didn't hurt, I didn't find it hot to wear.

I got a nice, inexpensive fanny pack at Wal-Mart. I think it was $4.77 and it it light pink and grey. They also have light blue/grey and light purple/grey. They are in the purse/handbag section. I love it and it is very cute!

That one actually looks cute! I usually use a small Nike backpack. It works well and isn't real heavy, but I find myself carrying it on my shoulder like a purse, rather than using it as a backpack. Sort of defeats the purpose.:upsidedow Now...do I switch over to the fannypack? I stopped using them quite a while ago because I hate the way they look on me! I've yet to find the ideal method for toting things around the parks!

I got an Old Navy messenger bag a couple of weeks ago. My fanny pack isn't big enough for what we want to bring in to the parks with us, I needed to find something new. It's a good size ~ not too big and it has a zipper along the bottom to allow it to expand. It will be plenty big enough to hold our necessities (small wallet, digital camera, sunblock, small bag with bandaids, moleskin etc)It was only $10 on sale and comes in nice colors too! Here's a link so you can see:

I'm still trying to decide what to do... fanny pack, one strap backpack or a regular two strap backpack (which isnt one of those super big ones but a light weight lavender jansport that I love)

I'm going to be alone for some of my trip so I have to carry all of my own stuff. I dont think I will be happy with a fanny pack (too not stylish :rotfl: ) but then again, style isnt everything.

I think I have to find one of each, stuff them with what I will want to carry, make sure it all fits and then put it on and wear it around the house for a few hours taking it on and off.

Anyone see a problem or a benefit to any of these options? besides the obvious hands-free fanny pack or the "i can pack my long sleaved shirt and guidebook and extra ___" backpacks (I am ALWAYS cold :rotfl2: yes, I know I am going in June)
