So yeah, I don't trust myself to not leave a bag somewhere and I'm afraid of someone stealing things out of the backpack behind me... so the option left is fanny packs worn to the side.

But here's my question. Are they common at WDW? Are we going to look like the world's biggest dorks in the parks? The ones we have are here: http://www.ebags.com/high_sierra/corkscrew/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=18414 and they hold just about everything! I love them, but I'm just convinced people are going to chuckle lol

Thanks for any advice and move this if needed. :)

I am a firm believer that Disney is THE ONLY place where you can get away with wearing a fanny pack and won't be laughed at. It's very common at Disney and you'll be fine!

I have no qualms about wearing fanny packs. Do y'all remember that they were originally called hip packs? Meant to be worn on the side or slightly to the front---ok dating myself here. :teeth:
I carry a backpack only if we are going to be out all day and my DD may need a change of clothes, etc.(we graduated from diaper bag to this-well i never really used an actual diaper bag-more like a book bag with a flap) Sorry late and I am babbling...ANYWAY....I like the hip packs, your stuff is close to you, lots of room, and convienent. Just dont be like some ppl I have seen and wear it literally on your fanny :rotfl: . THAT looks stupid(no offense all-you didnt see the one very large butt I saw one sitting on-looked like an extra bun..lol) Besides wearing them on the backside is a little not smart on the safety issue. Many times I could have unzipped one and taken what I wanted and I really dont think the owner would have noticed because they were so involved in looking at other things.

Yes! That's why I don't want to wear a backpack! :) I'm so glad that people still wear these here... we both wear ours slightly to the side on our hip and I feel much better with things like our camera and things close to me. ESPECIALLY since I know he'll be bringing my engagement ring (he's proposing while we're there, I just don't know when and it's driving me NUTS!) into the park so that's DEFINITELY something we want to keep close!

AWWW...keep us all posted with all the juicy details of the when and where. I like to live vicariously thru others. LOL

I wore my Grumpy one proudly ALL week long!!:) I bought it when we went in 2001 and love it. IT isactually a great one it fits my camera so I don't have to worry about that either. The back packs only had snacks for the littles and stuff to keep them busy at dinner and stuff.

Okay, first of all, I call mine a lumbar pack :teeth:

I'm 26 and I used to pick on my mom for wearing them, until I realized that it's a whole other world when you wear one. Sometimes I feel like I'm leaving a bookbag on rides and start to go back, until I realize I'm just living an unencumbered life.

Really, though, I'll never go to WDW without one now. It's funny, because in WDW everyone wears them. I'd say a good 60% of people (total random number, but I would think it's pretty accurate).

DL, on the other hand, is a different story. When I went with my sister (who still refuses to wear one, BTW) to DL last year for New Year's, I only saw one other person wearing one the entire 5-day trip. I realized that A) most of the people who visit DL are locals and don't really need one, I guess, and B) people are probably more image-conscious in California. A little off topic, but interesting. I felt like a dork - but I kept it on!

So, don't be worried about how you look. What's important is how convenient it is. I agree about concerns with people possibly taking things from bookbags, and, I used to worry about my camera and camcorder in there when people stand too close in lines and smash into you, or are holding little kids that sometimes kick it because they're too close. I was petrified my cameras would be ruined. Now, I couple the pack with a camera bag for the camcorder I can swing around to the front when standing in lines and I know everything's protected.

Okay, long answer, but I hope it helped. Go for it - you'll be glad you did :thumbsup2

I wear my fanny pack in WDW, and, yes, I look like a dork. Do I care? No. I finally figured out though that I needed to take it off for pictures.

Dork here. I will be wearing my Mickey Mouse fanny/hip/lumbar pack later today when we ARRIVE IN DISNEY!!!

Yes, you will look like a dork. Yes, you will be laughed at. Just be prepared for that.

Lots of people wear the fanny packs at WDW. Look and see what the *Tag Fairy* did to me. She quoted me from a previous post about fanny packs.

With all the Goofy hats, Mouse ears, Pluto hats, crazy t-shirts, etc., do you really think anyone is walking around laughing at those of us who wear hip packs? :rotfl2:

There is plenty of stuff like wacky high heel shoes to laugh at. I love looking at the Bad Shoe web site. How about women who wear skirts; men who wear skirts (I saw one)? :lmao:

By the way, why does anyone even care if someone they don't know and will never see again, is laughing anyway? We think part of the fun of Disney is to people-watch, those ones are part of the "show" and we enjoy looking, but certainly are discreet about it.

Everyone is too busy having fun at WDW to concern themselves with what everyone else is wearing. Go for comfort - just take off the fanny pack for photos, you'll thank yourself for it.

Ditto to that.

"But here's my question. Are they common at WDW?"

Does the Mouse have Ears? yes they are common at Disney World. I wear at least two myself and hubby usually wears a bigger one. My problem is getting them aroundy my Tum! pirate:

I loved my hip pack when we went to disney. DH even wore one. We got ours in sports at walmart. It had a large pocket for camera, guide book, etc. A small pocket for tickets, and a bottle holder on each side. So we could carry lots of water if we needed it. We went in December and didn't need that much water but we could also stick garbage in an empty spot. We wore them in the front for safety and had a great time. DD had a much smaller hip pack for her autograph book and marker.

You see many people using hip packs at disney.

OK, for the fannypack and back pack users, what do you do with them items when you are on rides? Can you take them on most rides?

Thanks

Backpacks are way more of a pain on rides. Fanny packs can be worn on anything. For lap bar rides I put the bar underneath the pack. Over the shoulder harnesses work perfectly. No linking your backpack around your legs on roller coasters so it doesn't fly out - so much easier!

My thing is if your comfortable and feel secure and safe wearing a fanny pack then who but you should care what you look like. Fanny Packs make sense to me, you can reach in grab what you need and be able to take it on the rides with you. Have fun on your trip no matter what you use :thumbsup2
